A salt breeze still clings to Batumi's palms as the van peels away from the Black Sea and the road begins to climb. Within hours the air sharpens; peaks grow teeth and the Enguri River dares you to keep pace as it thunders through the gorge. By late afternoon the stone towers of Mestia puncture the skyline, wind-creased and watchful.

The round-trip hike from the trailhead takes about 2 hours total, rated moderately difficult due to uneven terrain and some elevation gain.
