You begin before dawn, leaving Cusco by van and train, the engine hum a steady companion as the valley light brightens. At KM 104 the trail takes you from river-side path into orchid-scattered cloud forest; the Urubamba River below seems to dare you forward as stone terraces and stepped ruins appear above the trees.
