Morning light washes the stone streets of Shaxi as your minivan eases into the square—tea vendors arrange cups, and the carved wooden eaves throw cool shadows over cobbled lanes. You step down from the vehicle and the past feels tangible: theatre posters flake beside a centuries-old bridge, and monks' chants drift from a courtyard temple.
