The sun over Zanzibar slips behind the dhow masts as you board a late afternoon flight to the mainland; within an hour the coastline gives way to the flat, grass-scattered plains of Nyerere National Park. At the airstrip a driver-guide waits with a 4x4—the metal frame already cooling in the dusk—ready to push off into a landscape that seems to rearrange itself after dark.
