Hoover Dam was built during the 1930s as a federal project to control the Colorado River, provide irrigation water and generate hydroelectric power; it reshaped settlement and agriculture across the Southwest.
The Colorado River’s flow and the regional water supply are tightly managed; visitors are encouraged to minimize water waste and stay on designated paths to protect fragile desert soils.
