Sunlight arrives first at the rim and then pours down the walls of Oman’s great gorge, turning banded limestone and sandstone into stripes of gold and ochre. On day one you roll north from Muscat through villages and date farms, then climb into the Hajar range where the road narrows and a 4x4 becomes less luxury than necessity. At the rim the gorge opens like a map; a narrow Balcony Walk traces the cliff edge and dares you to look straight down.
