The trail opens with a cool, highland breath: rice terraces step away from the valley and a rim of clouds drifts over limestone ridges. On day one hikers leave Sapa’s bustle and climb across trails that skirt Silver Rock Mountain, passing a Hmong village and a tiny mountain school where children wave from mud-brick courtyards.
