You start before dawn, the guide steering a private van out of Beijing while foothills lengthen into stone ridgelines. At Huanghuacheng the Wall rises abruptly from mountain slopes and a reservoir glints below — sections here are steep and exposed, with original stonework and stretches that lack parapets, so the route feels like an invitation rather than a promenade.
