You step out before dawn in Arequipa, the city lights shrinking as the van climbs into thin air. By first light the canyon opens: a raw cut of layered volcanic rock where wind and river argue with gravity. The guide parks at the Cruz del Condor lookout and condors wheel above the opposite rim, their shadowed wings slicing through columns of morning thermals.

Requires good aerobic fitness and leg strength for sustained uphill sections and long descents; prior day-hike experience recommended
Expect a strenuous day of descent then an early pre-dawn ascent of roughly 1,000–1,500 m that can take about 3 hours; moderate-to-high fitness is required.
This tour includes the Colca National Park entrance fee (about 70 soles), but bring cash for hot springs and personal expenses.
Rim villages are around 3,000–3,300 m and the oasis is more than a thousand meters lower; acclimatize in Arequipa (2,300 m) before starting.
You’ll spend the night in an oasis lodge with a private room and bathroom; facilities on trail sections are basic or absent.
The canyon is shaped by volcanic layers and centuries of Andean agriculture; terraces around Cabanaconde date back to pre-Incan times and remain in use.
