You step off the short flight and the air of Sichuan meets you—warm, tinged with tea and spices—then a driver eases you out toward river-cut cliffs and a park where bamboo stalks crowd quiet enclosures. Day one walks you to the foot of the Leshan Giant Buddha: a 71-meter stone colossus carved into red-brown cliff, its presence felt in the hush of the river as water dares the banks below.

The Leshan Buddha was carved during the Tang dynasty to calm dangerous river currents; Chengdu’s panda program grew from early 20th-century conservation and research efforts.
The panda base focuses on breeding, veterinary research and reintroduction science; visitors help by following rules, not feeding animals, and minimizing waste.
