The sky over Cappadocia fills before dawn: a low rumble of burners, patchwork balloons rising like slow planets over a moonscape of eroded stone. Below, narrow valleys of red and ocher fold into one another; the lights of cave hotels wink on terraces carved from soft volcanic tuff. On day one a camel shuffles through the Rose Valley, its silhouette a patient black against sculpted spires. On day two the balloons take you aloft, the region’s fairy chimneys reduced to an intimate forest of pillars beneath your basket.
