About

Join Beer Hiking Bavaria author Rich Carbonara for two Beer/Food Experiences. One day will take you into the brewing heartland: to some of the finest small breweries in the Bamberg surroundings. Though Bamberg is home to some of the greatest breweries anywhere, locals know there are even more only a short trip away. The scenic hike is about five miles and a mild grade. Longer routes are possible if your group is up for it.

Note there is 185m/600 ft ascent & descent over the course of the hike.

The second day will be a stroll around World Heritage Bamberg with an emphasis on brewing history and visiting some of the 13 breweries around town.

These tours are designed around food and beer. I've been visiting the area since 1997 and have written many blogs on the various regional dishes and beer styles. You don't want to miss a dish or beer, do you?

*Please note that small breweries take vacations even during the summer and sometimes even close for a day on a whim. While not likely, it is possible that a planned stop might be closed.

Included

Public transport to trail head and guided hiking. First beer is on me.

Not included

Food and additional beverages.

What to Expect

-For the Countryside Experiences, we meet inside the main entrance of the fairly small Main train station (HBF) in Bamberg at 9:15. Please be prompt as per above.

-For the Bamberg Town Walk, we will meet at a designated brewery in the center of the Old Town. It depends on the day of the week and which breweries are open/and we decide to visit. It's your own private tour so I want to make sure you go where you'd like.

-Tours go rain or shine. For the hiking tours, please bring a small pack to carry the essentials: rain jacket, extra layer, filled water bottle and a temperature appropriate hat. In cooler months, bring something warm just in case the temperature drops. Please wear comfortable weather appropriate walking shoes.

-Please bring enough cash for beer and food as small breweries do not accept credit or bank cards. Even in Bamberg, many of the breweries do not accept credit cards.

Adventure Tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes

The route includes uneven countryside paths and cobblestone streets in the town; comfortable, supportive footwear is essential.

Hydrate before tastings

Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during hikes before indulging in the beer tastings.

Pack light layers

Weather can shift quickly in Bavaria, especially between shaded forest trails and open fields.

Reserve in advance

These private tours are tailored experiences with limited availability—booking early secures your spot.
