You step out of the small aircraft and the world rearranges itself: glacier ice and rainforest shrink beneath you, a braided river dares you with its braided channels, and the Tasman Sea shimmers to the west. The first seconds of free fall are all motion — wind pushing, the instructor steady at your back — then the canopy blooms and the valley exhales below.
