About this landmark
Towering at 15 meters, Hvitserkur is an iconic rock formation located on the eastern shore of the Vatnsnes Peninsula in North Iceland. Often referred to as the ‘Drinking Dinosaur’ due to its striking resemblance to a prehistoric creature sipping water, this landmark captivates visitors with its unique allure. Hvitserkur is a volcanic rock formation that has been sculpted by centuries of exposure to the fierce elements of the North Atlantic. This natural marvel is also a haven for seabirds like gulls and fulmars that choose its rugged cliffs for nesting, adding to the dynamic natural scenery.
Hvitserkur holds a special place in Icelandic folklore. Legend whispers of a troll caught by the sunrise, frozen forever in stone while it attempted to tear down a nearby Christian monastery. Such tales add a mystical charm that enriches any visit.
The basalt base of the formation has been reinforced with concrete to protect against erosion, allowing visitors to continue enjoying this majestic spot. Its dramatically isolated setting provides a perfect opportunity for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset when the rock’s silhouette is vividly outlined against the colorful sky.
