Sunset Hill Golf Course

Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, USAWhite Mountains

Sunset Hill Golf Course in Sugar Hill, NH, presents a modest 9-hole parkland layout geared toward beginners and casual players. Its approachable design and natural setting offer an inviting way to enjoy golf in the White Mountains region, emphasizing ease of play and accessibility.

Course Overview

Located in the scenic foothills of Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, Sunset Hill Golf Course offers a straightforward 9-hole layout that appeals primarily to beginner and casual golfers seeking an accessible introduction to the game. The course takes on a parkland style, framed by gentle rolling terrain and mature trees that provide a quiet backdrop more than a dramatic challenge. This public course accommodates players of varying skills, making it a practical choice for families, novices, and those interested in a relaxed round rather than a test of technical shot-making.

Playing at Sunset Hill means engaging with a course that prioritizes approachability over complexity. Fairways are generally generous, with few hazards interrupting the flow of play, and greens tend to be smaller but straightforward in shape. The course length reflects its entry-level orientation, offering a manageable yardage that complements its slower pace and walkable design. For players refining their short game or local golfers seeking an affordable round, it serves well, though experienced players looking for strategic depth or championship-caliber conditions may find it limited.

While the course landscape is pleasant and open, some maintenance inconsistencies have been noted, particularly with the putting surfaces. These areas could influence playing conditions, especially for those seeking smooth, receptive greens. Signage between holes is minimal and can present some navigation challenges. The facility includes a basic clubhouse with limited amenities, functioning more as a convenient gathering spot rather than a full-service venue.

Sunset Hill’s location makes it an easy stop within the White Mountains region, fitting well for travelers combining golf with other outdoor activities. Walking is encouraged; the course layout is compact and undemanding on foot, suitable for a leisurely stroll. Golfers are advised to bring sturdy footwear due to occasional rough patches.

Though the property may not stand out for pristine conditioning or elaborate design, it offers value through its accessibility and unpretentious atmosphere. It provides an entry point to golf in the North Country, combining natural beauty with a simple, playable design to suit those new to the game or exploring golf at a casual level.

Course Highlights

A simple parkland design with open fairways and tree-lined holes, Sunset Hill is recognized for its accessibility to new golfers and families. While lacking elaborate architectural features, the course offers a pleasant environment framed by northern New England landscapes. The course layout fosters steady play without excessive pressure, focusing on fundamental golf skills rather than aggressive hazards or complex greens.

I really hate to leave negative reviews but.... My wife and I played golf here earlier this week. To say the course was in rough shape is an understatement. The greens were absolutely unplayable. There was very little signage to tell you which tee box to use for the next hole and the flags were so faded you couldn't read the numbers on them. All of this would have been OK if it wasn't for the price they charged. It cost two of us $65 to play 9 holes on the worst course I've seen. Maplewood is close by and is in outstanding shape and they only charge $50 to play 9 holes with a cart after 3pm. Save your time and money and go play someplace else. In response to the owner, I never said your course should be a country club. We saw the signs about the greens being in rough shape. My point was, if you are going to have a course that rough, than you should lower your price. $65 for 2 people to play 9 holes is ridiculously high for a course in that condition.

We dined on 12/30/22 in the Pub from 5:30-7:30pm. We were the only guests there. We received our meals after waiting about 55 minutes. Our meals were from the Specials offerings that night, mine being a $38.00 steak over French Fries. When the meals arrived, my friend's portion was quite small while my piece of steak was generous, although the fries immediately reminded us as what you would expect from a fast food restaurant. The meat was very difficult to cut but I attributed it to the poor quality knife I was given. I cut about 1/8th of the steak into bite sized pieces and tried the first bite. The salt and pepper seasoning was well distributed and tasty at first. As the chewing continued on the now, known to be, tough piece of meat, an odd taste also came through. I then tried the fries and as expected, they were nearly the exact product that McDonald's serves, just less flavorful. Another bite of the steak revealed the same odd taste so I described this to my friend who elected to try a bite of it and the fries, as well. She, too, was unimpressed. At this point, I decided to push my plate aside and the restaurant was becoming busier so we did not see our server (presumably the owner or manager) until he asked us if we wanted dessert. We declined and he quickly disappeared, without asking how our food was. We received our bill, paid it, left a 20% tip and left. Over the next 12 to 18 hours, I became violently ill at home, with a very high fever. For the next night and following day, I was sick in bed until it mostly resolved at about the 36-48 hour mark. At this point, I decided to email the Inn. I revealed all of the above and asked for a response. It has been an additional 5 days since my email was sent and I have received no communication in return. I had asked that my $38.00 steak meal be refunded and still, no offer to credit my card or otherwise. To say I am disappointed is an understate. I have been a loyal patron for thirty years now. I even had my Wedding there back in 1996, which speaks to my fondness of the Inn. My only conclusion is that now, with new owners in place, they just do not have the same sense of dedication, commitment or care of their customers, which is heartbreaking. I truly hope they read this very honest review and take it into consideration as they welcome 2023 in with their new and forever faithful customers. I will update this if I hear from them.
