University of Montana Golf Course

Missoula, Montana, USAWestern Montana

The University of Montana Golf Course offers an approachable yet challenging 18-hole parkland layout with mature trees and rolling terrain near downtown Missoula. A public course blending precision demands with a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere, it welcomes golfers seeking both casual rounds and focused practice.

Course Overview

Located within the city limits of Missoula, Montana, the University of Montana Golf Course offers an accessible, challenging layout in a setting defined by mature trees and rolling terrain. This 18-hole public course features a classic parkland style that invites players of all skill levels to test their game amid well-kept fairways and undulating greens. While the landscape benefits from the shade and character provided by the tall, established trees lining many holes, it also demands precision and strategic shot placement, especially given the length and density of rough in places. Players who stray from the fairway will find that recovering can be a real test of skill, adding a layer of challenge that rewards thoughtful course management.

The course stretches out with varied shot demands, mixing gentle doglegs with more open holes, encouraging a mix of controlled iron play and longer drives. Greens are moderately fast and exhibit subtle slopes that can influence putts significantly, requiring focus and reading skill. Some steeper elevations on fairways and greens add a physical element to walking the course, making the pace of play moderate but enjoyable. Experienced golfers will appreciate the balance here between approachable layout and moments of genuine difficulty.

Amenities include a well-run pro shop and a friendly, accommodating staff who contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. The practice facilities are reasonable, with a driving range that allows players to warm up or tune their swings affordably before hitting the first tee. Given the course’s location near the University of Montana, it also serves as a hub for local golf enthusiasts and visitors seeking an authentic Montana golfing experience without venturing far from the city.

For anyone planning a visit, walking is possible, though golfers should be prepared for some elevation changes and bring sturdy footwear. Carts are recommended for comfort, particularly on warmer days or for those looking to maintain a brisk pace. Whether looking for a relaxed outing or an engaging golf challenge, the University of Montana Golf Course remains a steady choice with evolving turf conditions and a community-driven vibe that welcomes both newcomers and seasoned players alike.

Course Highlights

The course is defined by mature trees that frame fairways and add complexity to routing, with varied elevation changes that influence shot selection and pace of play. Great, easy going atmosphere. But don't come for fast play. The course is harder than you think. Very mature trees, but it's been around forever.

Pretty dope place, the driving range is cheap so you can stay for as long as they’re open. I take all my friends here as long as they know how to swing.

We have golfed here just about every Friday morning before work since opening this season, and I can honestly say its one of my favorite places to play for a "home course" Since opening the greens team has made substantial progress on getting this course to look and play as well as it does. Staff is friendly and accommodating, and prices are extremely fair. Pace can be slow at times, but it is to be expected on a public course. Bravo to all involved in making this season exceptional. I look forward to many more fun rounds here!

This course is nice overall, but the grass in the rough is very long. If you miss the fairway, the shot out is very difficult to get back on track. The course also has some steeper slopes, both in the fairway and on the greens, so a cart is recommended. The people in the pro shop are very nice, and it was overall a fun round.
