King Ranch Golf Course

Frenchtown, Montana, USAWestern Montana

King Ranch Golf Course in Frenchtown, Montana, offers an 18-hole public layout set against wide-open mountain views and rolling meadows. This approachable course challenges players with tall rough and soft greens, delivering a relaxed yet strategic experience for golfers of all levels.

Course Overview

King Ranch Golf Course, located just outside Frenchtown, Montana, presents a rugged and tranquil golf experience that embraces the natural landscape of the region. This 18-hole public course offers an approachable yet engaging layout that appeals primarily to recreational golfers seeking a scenic, peaceful round without the pressures of championship play. The course stretches across open terrain with expansive views of surrounding mountains and rolling meadows, creating an inviting atmosphere where the pace of play can remain relaxed.

The course’s defining characteristic is its connection to the local environment. Tall grasses border the fairly generous fairways, demanding precision off the tee to avoid extended searches for errant shots. This tall rough, combined with uneven terrain and soft, somewhat spongy greens, challenges players to use strategy rather than just power. While the condition of the back nine has drawn some critique from visitors due to turf length and maintenance issues, the front nine tends to showcase more consistent playability.

Golfers will appreciate the straightforward layout tailored more toward enjoyment than tournament scoring, making King Ranch suitable for players at all skill levels, from casual weekend golfers to those refining their game in a low-pressure setting. The natural flora and occasional wildlife sightings contribute to the calm pace and reflective moments between shots.

Amenities include a welcoming pro shop staffed by helpful professionals who accommodate various needs, such as rental clubs for left-handed players. The onsite restaurant adds value to the overall experience, serving hearty meals and beverages that many local players praise as an essential part of their visit.

For visitors planning their rounds, heading out early in the day offers more pleasant temperatures and less impact from seasonal weather changes. Walking is possible but consider sturdy shoes due to slightly uneven terrain and longer grass in some areas. Carts are generally available, though walking enhances the connection with the landscape.

King Ranch Golf Course embodies a Montana golf outing that balances modest demands with generous scenery, offering a practical, friendly venue for golfers seeking both quiet enjoyment and a touch of challenge amid natural surroundings.

Course Highlights

King Ranch presents wide fairways framed by native tall grass and subtle elevation changes that require thoughtful shot placement. The course’s soft, sponge-like greens provide a unique putting surface that rewards patient reading. Friendly staff and the clubhouse’s dining options add to the inviting ambiance. The open vistas toward Montana’s mountainous backdrop enhance every hole with natural beauty, while the occasional sightings of local wildlife offer quiet moments between shots.

So happy the golf course is serving dinner again. Frenchtown needed a nice dinner spot with good food. We have had the prime rib sandwich, hot dog, and prime rib dinner, no complaints. Service was great.

Beautiful setting with expansive views. Very playable and peaceful. This course has a lot of potential; another star within reach with just a little better funding. Pro Shop folks are very friendly and accommodating. Really enjoyed my round here despite the smoke!

I’ve always hated being the person to leave a negative review and I wouldn’t even see it as such just a simple warning before you head out. You can absolutely bomb it to the middle of the fairway on every hole and still search for your ball for a good 15 minutes before finding it or some other random ball because the grass is a good 4”. The greens were super spongy and there were pretty bad divots all over, on the bright side if you go you’ll find about 25 other balls lost on the skirts. Beautiful views but definitely needs some better maintenance on the back 9.

A forgotten golf course. It's a shame that so much money was spent on fixing the "front" nine (really should be the back nine...) and it already looks so neglected. The greens felt like walking on sponges and the grass was so long and slow you just had to aim at the hole and hit it as hard as you could. There is no reading the breaks. If you miss the fairway you will lose your ball in the tall grass or water, but likely find a few during the search. Tee boxes were hardly distinguishable from the rough around them.

Had a wonderful experience at King Ranch golf course! Beautiful scenery with wildlife sightings while golfing. Affordable, friendly service and excellent staff. I’m a lefty and so is my son and they had great rental clubs to accommodate us both. Can’t recommend them enough! Restaurant also has delicious food and drinks.
