King Ranch Golf Course

Frenchtown, Montana, USAWestern Montana

King Ranch Golf Course presents golfers with an 18-hole challenge framed by sweeping Montana views. Its blend of wide fairways, natural terrain, and variable conditions offers a welcoming yet thought-provoking round for players of many skill levels.

Course Overview

King Ranch Golf Course in Frenchtown, Montana offers an engaging and serene 18-hole experience that challenges golfers while surrounding them with expansive natural beauty. This public course takes full advantage of its rugged, open terrain, blending traditional golf elements with a distinctly western landscape. With wide fairways that encourage strategic play and long rough that demands precision off the tee, King Ranch rewards accuracy and patience in every round. The layout provides a solid test predominantly for mid- to higher-handicap players seeking an approachable yet stimulating day out.

The course’s setting captures Montana’s wide-open skies and native vegetation, creating an environment where the wind often plays a pivotal role in shot selection. Elevation changes are subtle but add a dynamic flow to the routing, while water hazards and wildlife sightings enrich the golfing experience with natural challenges and moments of quiet reflection.

One of King Ranch’s defining characteristics is its length and forgiving fairways on the front nine, making it an inviting test for developing players, while the back nine introduces more demanding approaches and tricky greens that can punish wayward shots. It is not a course for those seeking immaculate manicuring; some areas retain a rugged quality, especially in the rough and greens, where soft surfaces can alter expected ball roll. For players comfortable adjusting to course conditions and willing to engage with the landscape’s natural elements, this brings an authentic and memorable round.

Amenities include a well-stocked pro shop and a clubhouse dining facility known for hearty meals and friendly service, rounding out the experience for players and visitors alike. Golfers planning a visit will find rental clubs available, including left-handed sets, and a staff ready to accommodate a range of needs in this accessible Montana locale.

King Ranch offers a distinct blend of natural beauty and approachable golf, providing a peaceful retreat that invites players to connect with the game on straightforward, elemental terms. It is a course that asks for patience, rewards thoughtful shot-making, and offers a fresh perspective on golf amid big sky country.

Course Highlights

King Ranch distinguishes itself through its integration with native Montana landscapes, featuring expansive views, variable wind conditions, and a layout that tests shot-making with long rough and subtle elevation changes. The back nine introduces more complex green complexes and tighter fairways, presenting meaningful challenges as the round progresses. The course supports players with well-maintained rental equipment and a welcoming clubhouse that complements the rustic environment.

Had a wonderful experience at King Ranch golf course! Beautiful scenery with wildlife sightings while golfing. Affordable, friendly service and excellent staff. I’m a lefty and so is my son and they had great rental clubs to accommodate us both. Can’t recommend them enough! Restaurant also has delicious food and drinks.

Fun and relaxing. Found 22 golf balls in the rough and fairways as well. Good time.

So happy the golf course is serving dinner again. Frenchtown needed a nice dinner spot with good food. We have had the prime rib sandwich, hot dog, and prime rib dinner, no complaints. Service was great.

Beautiful setting with expansive views. Very playable and peaceful. This course has a lot of potential; another star within reach with just a little better funding. Pro Shop folks are very friendly and accommodating. Really enjoyed my round here despite the smoke!

I’ve always hated being the person to leave a negative review and I wouldn’t even see it as such just a simple warning before you head out. You can absolutely bomb it to the middle of the fairway on every hole and still search for your ball for a good 15 minutes before finding it or some other random ball because the grass is a good 4”. The greens were super spongy and there were pretty bad divots all over, on the bright side if you go you’ll find about 25 other balls lost on the skirts. Beautiful views but definitely needs some better maintenance on the back 9.

A forgotten golf course. It's a shame that so much money was spent on fixing the "front" nine (really should be the back nine...) and it already looks so neglected. The greens felt like walking on sponges and the grass was so long and slow you just had to aim at the hole and hit it as hard as you could. There is no reading the breaks. If you miss the fairway you will lose your ball in the tall grass or water, but likely find a few during the search. Tee boxes were hardly distinguishable from the rough around them.
