Fantasy Valley Golf Course

McHenry, Maryland, USAWestern Maryland

Fantasy Valley Golf Course in McHenry, Maryland, is a public 18-hole layout set against mountain views, challenging golfers with narrow fairways and strategic holes. Players encounter a demanding routing, scenic overlooks, and an honest test that rewards accuracy over power.

Course Overview

Fantasy Valley Golf Course offers an intriguing blend of natural landscape and challenging golf nestled within the scenic mountain backdrop of McHenry, Maryland. This 18-hole public course presents a layout that tests accuracy and strategic thinking, especially with its notably narrow fairways demanding precision off the tee. While not a classic Pete Dye design, the routing features several holes that wind thoughtfully through the varying terrain, demanding both finesse and course management.

The course’s setting is defined by elevated vantage points overlooking deep hollows and woodland edges, creating a striking visual contrast between the holes. Players find themselves navigating an environment where tree-lined fairways channel shots and where the undulating greens invite careful approach play. The signature views from hole 10 stand out, pairing a challenging shot with a moment to absorb the surrounding mountain vistas.

Playability at Fantasy Valley leans toward golfers who appreciate tactical challenges more than long bombing drives. The course layout rewards strategic shot placement and patience, particularly given the tighter corridors through the front nine. It opens up more on the back nine, providing balance and variation to the round. The greens tend to be slower, which can require adjusting putting speed and putting lines, an aspect that demands thoughtful attention from golfers of all skill levels.

Amenities are limited compared to larger resort venues—there is no driving range or putting green on site, so arriving prepared for warm-up elsewhere is advisable. The staff is known for friendliness and hands-on assistance, which adds a personal touch to the overall experience.

Course maintenance has received mixed feedback. Fairways and teeing grounds sometimes show signs of wear with patchy turf and uneven bunker conditions, though many players find the challenge and scenery compelling enough to return. Golfers planning their visit should consider twilight rates for a budget-friendly experience, as the full price might not align with current course conditions.

Fantasy Valley demands commitment and a tactical approach from golfers willing to measure their game not just by length, but by precision amid nature’s shifting frame.

Course Highlights

Fantasy Valley provides a mountain-style course layout that combines narrow, tree-lined fairways with elevated tees and scenic overlooks. The 10th hole offers one of the most striking views on the course, challenging golfers with an uphill approach. While the course lacks extensive practice facilities, it compensates with its natural surroundings and a routing that rewards strategic play. Maintenance efforts can fluctuate, but the course often draws players interested in a solid tactical test set above the lake region.

If you are looking for a Pete Dye course this isn’t it. But I was pleasantly surprised by this course. Narrow fairways, greens were slow but in good shape some bunkers were bad but some good. Beautiful scenery and views. Very friendly staff. Had a blast on this course and will definitely visit again.

Paying to play this course is straight up theft. Absolutely no maintaince of the property at all. Fairway, rough, it's all the same. Boring design to boot. I'm assuming they can get away with it because of their proximity to the lake and mountain, but it'd be worth it to just drive anywhere else. You couldn't pay me to play this course again. Absolute sham.

Course was in good shape. And the view at hole number 10 was great! There were quite a number of challenging holes. But then again I don't get out very much to play. I would return to play another 18

We drove 3.5 hours for a week in Wisp. The weather was rainy most of the time but today it was a beautiful sunny day so we wanted to play golf. $65 per person for 18 holes wasn’t bad…. But seriously the course was in horrible shape. We arrived early to hit the driving range & putting green but there was neither. The tee boxes were in rough shape and difficult to play from. Hole 15 from the reds had no tee box. The fairways were in horrible shape! The bunkers have never had sand in…. Full of weeds & water. But on a good note, the staff was super kind & accommodating. There were several foursomes of bachelor party guys in front of us. They started us at home 10 and we never had a group in front or behind us.

Course is a tough layout with tight fairways on front and then opening up more on the back. Was pretty disappointed in the condition of the course...tee boxes need new sod, fairways had some high weeds growing (didn't really affect play), and some bunkers were unplayable. Green were slow but still playable overall. We paid the twilight rate of $40 so it was okay. I would have been pretty angry if we would have paid full price to play it given the condition of the course. Still had a good time.

Save your money, worst course I’ve played in years and it was $78! Sand traps are filled with grass.

A joke of a course. First off the price, even for weekends, is ridiculous. $90! Needless to say I won't be returning to this course. There is a reason the reviews are atrocious. If they want to continue charging rates like that, they need to change out their greenskeepers team (seems all they do is cut the grass and that's it). The tee box, bunkers, and greens are comical. Worst course in the area (and probably surronding area of DCL) by a couple miles.
