Winnfield Golf in Lonaconing, MD presents an affordable 18-hole layout marked by generous greens and gently sloping fairways. Offering a relaxed setting with a few routing quirks, this course suits golfers seeking a budget-friendly round surrounded by rural charm.

Course Overview

Winnfield Golf offers an accessible golfing experience in the quiet surroundings of Lonaconing, Maryland. This 18-hole course caters primarily to golfers seeking value and a casual round, providing a straightforward layout that challenges while remaining approachable. The course’s design features gently sloping fairways that demand thoughtful shot selection, coupled with putting surfaces that, despite some unevenness, showcase notable quality for this level of golf.

The landscape is rural and unpretentious, with tree-lined fairways that occasionally constrict play, adding a subtle test of accuracy. While fairways vary in condition, often presenting rough patches, the greens stand out as one of the stronger elements, offering decent roll and speed. Holes 6 through 8 have earned particular praise for their engaging routing and layout, injecting a welcome rhythm into the overall flow of the course.

Winnfield operates on a cash-only basis, reflecting a no-frills approach to play where affordability takes precedence. Golfers should prepare for limited signage and possibly some ambiguity navigating holes, especially for first-timers; however, repeat visits reveal a clearer path through the layout. The course generally encourages walking, which allows players to absorb the quiet atmosphere and rural charm.

Amenities are sparse, emphasizing a traditional, back-to-basics style of golf. The driving range is available, though pricing can fluctuate, and players should come equipped accordingly. Conditions and service have been noted as inconsistent at times, suggesting a patient approach will maximize enjoyment.

While not a polished resort or private club, Winnfield Golf offers a straightforward, budget-friendly round with friendly locals and a touch of country character. It suits golfers who value solid greens and don’t mind navigating some quirks in course flow or maintenance. For those prioritizing an unpretentious atmosphere and a chance to play 18 holes at a modest price, Winnfield Golf provides a workable, laid-back golf outing in western Maryland.

When it first opened, it was an inexpensive place to play. Not so much anymore. It's a decent course but you can play 18 holes at Fore Sisters for the same price you can play 9 holes at Winnfield and Fore Sisters is much nicer.

Goofy layout. Course card does not match the holes. You may get lost. Carts are in rough shape. Closed at odd times. Folks are grouchy at times. Driving range prices are all over the place. I’ve never paid the same price for a wide range of bags of balls. I have tried to buy a membership twice. They don’t accept credit or debit cards. Greens are a very bright spot. As good as any out there. Place needs a good rethink and more accommodating staff and owner. Can’t beat the price of greens fees if you are willing to put up with some eccentricity.

We played two 9 hole rounds here at the end of July. Hole layout was little confusing the first round (more signage would be a plus), but by the second round it was easier to follow. The greens were good to fair conditions, fairways are little rough in places but for the pricing no complaints and will return to play in the future. Holes 6, 7 & 8 have a great layout, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a CASH ONLY course and a little bit on the country boy side, everyone was friendly.

Reasonable priced but the course was in a state of mass confusion. There was no tee time required so we showed up at 2pm. There was a family of 6 in front of us using one set of clubs and also another group of 8 in front of them . This clogged up the entire course. All other groups were jumping around trying to find any open holes to play. We quit after 9 holes. Pretty stressful round of golf
