Sweetgrass Golf Club

Harris, Michigan, USAUpper Peninsula Michigan

Sweetgrass Golf Club offers a meticulously maintained 18-hole championship course known for wide fairways, fast undulating greens, and a challenging yet fair layout. Located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it presents a rewarding test for golfers of varying skill levels amid a quietly captivating landscape.

Course Overview

Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris, Michigan, stands out in the Upper Peninsula as a finely maintained 18-hole championship course that balances challenge with approachable playability. Stretching over 7,200 yards with a par of 72, this layout rewards strategic thinking and shot-making precision amid a landscape that emphasizes well-kept fairways and fast, undulating greens. The course’s design favors golfers who enjoy a test of accuracy without overwhelming forced risks, making it accessible to a broad range of skill levels while still presenting a stern challenge for low handicappers.

The environment around Sweetgrass is quietly engaging rather than grandiose. Rolling terrain and thick stands of native grasses frame holes with subtle elevation shifts and varied angles to the pins. Fairways are notably wide, encouraging confident drives but inviting players to carefully plan their approach shots to multi-level greens that demand careful reading and steady putting. Two standout features are the shared double greens on holes 9 and 18, which create an unusual and clever symmetry within the round, adding visual interest and requiring focus on precise green positioning.

Golfers often note the demanding nature of holes 4 and 13, where the combination of length, hazards, and green contours calls for both length and finesse. The practice facilities are extensive, with a large driving range and putting areas that provide excellent preparation for the course conditions. Course conditioning is a strong suit; the grounds crew’s dedication keeps fairways lush and greens running fast and true even late into the season.

For those considering a visit, the serene setting paired with a thoughtfully maintained layout delivers a memorable experience without the pressures of coastal winds or mountain altitude. Walking is encouraged here, as the terrain is gentle and paths clearly marked, allowing players to enjoy the subtle changes in landscape and course features. Sweetgrass Golf Club combines solid design with superior upkeep to rank among the best places to play in northern Michigan.

Course Highlights

Oh my, it all starts with the drive in...wow. It was my favorite course of the 4 we played up there. It was in emaculate shape. Played tough but fair both times. Tricky pin placements on a couple holes. Greens were in great shape, hard, fast and very few ball marks. Kudos to the superintendent and his crew!👍Practice area is huge and has it all!

Sweetgrass Golf Club is an amazing course with great conditions. There aren't any breathtaking views but a lot of good views with great golf design. The double green on 9 and 18 isn't unique but really works in this setup. Love the wide fairways. Greens are undulating and fast. Hole 4 and 13 are really challenging. Overall, best course in upper Michigan even better than Graywalls.

Sweetgrass is amazing. Very well manicured. Fairways are awesome and greens are very fast and true. The grounds crew do fantastic work. Greens are tricky with multi level surfaces. It will test your ability, but you won’t go home disappointed.
