Sage Run Golf Course

Bark River, Michigan, USAUpper Midwest

Sage Run Golf Course in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula challenges golfers with dramatic elevation changes and firm, fast greens. This public 18-hole layout offers a mountain-style experience that balances rugged beauty with demanding play for those ready to embrace its distinctive terrain.

Course Overview

Set against the rugged backdrop of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Sage Run Golf Course offers an 18-hole test that rewards strategic play and steady nerves. As a public course, it welcomes golfers eager to engage with a landscape defined by pronounced elevation changes and sweeping vistas that stretch over dense forests and rolling terrain. The layout presents a mountain-style character, where elevation shifts influence both shot selection and club distance, challenging players to balance power with precision.

Sage Run’s fairways are well-maintained, providing a firm but forgiving surface that invites confident drives. The greens, known for their firmness and speed, require careful reading; subtle breaks and undulations call for an attentive putting stroke. Several holes feature blind tee shots that push players to trust their judgment and course knowledge, making local insight or a course guide especially beneficial for first-time visitors.

The experience of walking Sage Run is as much a part of the challenge as the golf itself. Some tee boxes sit atop steep rises or slopes, presenting a physical test alongside the mental demands of the course. Players should prepare for these climbs with appropriate footwear and a level of fitness to fully enjoy the route. Carts are available but walking remains a favored way to absorb the natural setting and pace of play.

The course’s inviting layout rewards both seasoned golfers and those looking to sharpen their game. It requires a straight tee ball and an arsenal of well-placed shots to score well, with a few holes demanding tactical restraint more than brute strength. The wooded surroundings maintain a quiet, introspective atmosphere, enhanced during autumn when the changing foliage adds vibrant color to the fairways.

Facilities include a modest clubhouse and a welcoming staff committed to enhancing the visitor experience. While the tee box placements may present some uneven lies, particularly on downslopes, the overall presentation of Sage Run underscores its standing as a challenging and memorable course in the region. Preparation and focus are the keys to unlocking a rewarding day on this Michigan classic.

Course Highlights

Sage Run is distinguished by significant elevation changes that shape shot strategy across every hole. Awesome golfing experience at Sage Run. This course features dramatic elevation changes and super views. The course is challenging and beautifully playable at the same time. The fairways are excellent. The greens are firm and fast but are pure. This course is definitely a top golf course in the upper Midwest.

Decent course but the tee boxes are inexcusable. I get having somewhat uneven tee boxes is understandable but the placement on extreme downslopes was ridiculous at times. Hole 10 even two club lengths behind was still an extreme slope. There was also no discount for chalky rough greens. Overall feel there are better courses for the money.

It’s a course for professionals. It’s not a course for an enjoyable round of golf with friends. Several holes are utterly ridiculous. As a guy who plays for fun with friends, I won’t be playing here again.

Beautiful curse, friendly staff. The fall colors were outstanding. Some of the elevated t-boxes are a tuff climb. The one with railroad ties for steps is dangerous,

This is a very challenging golf course, especially if it's your first time playing. There are several blind tee shots. We accidentally drove into the group in front of us more than once and were driven into by the group behind us. There are tee shot angles that require knowledge of the landing area to give you the best opportunity of scoring well. Bring lots of balls, hit it straight and you'll have a great time. Lol

Excellent course with some challenging holes. The fairways and greens were in great shape. The tee box design is a confusing choice as some are sloped/crowned making it hard to find a level place to tee up a drive.
