Sage Run Golf Course

Bark River, Michigan, USAUpper Midwest

Sage Run Golf Course in Bark River, Michigan, presents an 18-hole mountain-style challenge defined by dramatic elevation changes and fast, firm greens. This public layout offers a rugged, strategic experience framed by natural beauty, rewarding thoughtful play amidst forested hills and seasonal color.

Course Overview

Sage Run Golf Course offers a demanding yet rewarding 18-hole layout set amid the natural terrain of Bark River, Michigan. This public course challenges golfers with significant elevation changes throughout its routing, rewarding strategic shot-making and precision. The course’s design leverages the surrounding landscape rather than reshaping it, resulting in a routing that feels like an extension of the land itself, featuring a blend of mountain-style contours and forested backdrops that create an immersive playing environment.

Players encounter a variety of holes where uphill and downhill lies test club selection and balance, while elevated tees provide commanding views and thoughtful perspectives on each green complex. The greens are known for their firmness and speed, demanding a steady putter and careful reading. Though exposed slopes on some tee boxes require attention, the course offers a genuine mountain-golf experience rarely found in the Upper Midwest. The fairways remain lush and well-kept, giving ample room for driving, yet accuracy is often rewarded where fairways narrow amidst natural obstacles.

Sage Run welcomes golfers of various skill levels, but it poses a particular challenge to those who thrive on course management and shot shaping. Blind tee shots are present, requiring knowledge or a keen eye to navigate effectively. Players should be ready for a rugged trek, with some uphill walks to elevated tees and greens that are accessible but require stamina and appropriate footwear.

The natural surroundings play a starring role, framed by seasonal color shifts that heighten the experience, especially in autumn when foliage transforms. Staff are noted for their friendliness and course maintenance remains a priority, contributing to an overall quality experience.

Planning a visit, golfers should prepare for the terrain by bringing extra balls and allowing extra time for the exercise involved. The course encourages walking to fully appreciate the contours and vistas, though carts are available. Sage Run stands as a distinctive golf destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, balancing challenge with playability within a striking natural setting.

Course Highlights

Awesome golfing experience at Sage Run. This course features dramatic elevation changes and super views. The course is challenging and beautifully playable at the same time. The fairways are excellent. The greens are firm and fast but are pure. This course is definitely a top golf course in the upper Midwest.

Decent course but the tee boxes are inexcusable. I get having somewhat uneven tee boxes is understandable but the placement on extreme downslopes was ridiculous at times. Hole 10 even two club lengths behind was still an extreme slope. There was also no discount for chalky rough greens. Overall feel there are better courses for the money.

Beautiful curse, friendly staff. The fall colors were outstanding. Some of the elevated t-boxes are a tuff climb. The one with railroad ties for steps is dangerous,

Excellent course with some challenging holes. The fairways and greens were in great shape. The tee box design is a confusing choice as some are sloped/crowned making it hard to find a level place to tee up a drive.

This is a very challenging golf course, especially if it's your first time playing. There are several blind tee shots. We accidentally drove into the group in front of us more than once and were driven into by the group behind us. There are tee shot angles that require knowledge of the landing area to give you the best opportunity of scoring well. Bring lots of balls, hit it straight and you'll have a great time. Lol

It’s a course for professionals. It’s not a course for an enjoyable round of golf with friends. Several holes are utterly ridiculous. As a guy who plays for fun with friends, I won’t be playing here again.
