Ram Rock Golf Course

Horseshoe Bay, Texas, USATexas Hill Country

Ram Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay offers a demanding 18-hole parkland layout set amid rolling hills and native grasses. The course challenges players with strategic bunkering and subtly contoured greens, balancing approachability with a test suited to a broad range of skill levels.

Course Overview

Located in the heart of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Ram Rock Golf Course offers an engaging 18-hole layout blending natural terrain with thoughtful design. This semi-private course stretches over approximately 6,900 yards, providing a par 72 test that challenges players of various skill levels. Its landscape is characterized by rolling hills and mature trees, setting an earthy tone that frames each hole with subtle elevation changes and strategic contours.

Ram Rock’s routing employs a traditional parkland style, featuring tight fairways lined by native grasses and groves of oak. Each hole demands precise shot placement, with bunkers positioned to complicate approach shots, and greens that reward careful reading but can become tricky under windy conditions common to the Texas Hill Country. The course presents a solid challenge for low handicappers while remaining approachable for those seeking a leisurely round, especially when played from the forward tees.

Attention to natural drainage and course conditioning typically keeps fairways firm and fast, encouraging a strategic, ground-based game when conditions allow. Players often remark on the calm vistas of Horseshoe Bay, where open skies and intermittent wildlife enhance the round without distraction. The layout's balance between challenging risk-reward scenarios and walkable flow invites players to engage physically and mentally, making it a strong pick for those looking to sharpen their game.

While the clubhouse at Ram Rock provides a convenient meeting point with basic amenities, players should prepare for available services reflecting its semi-private status. Walking is possible across most holes, though some elevation shifts suggest sturdy footwear and a moderate fitness level for a smooth experience. The course's slope rating exceeding 30 from the executive tees hints at the subtle but persistent difficulty integrated into the layout.

Ram Rock is best suited for golfers who appreciate thoughtful design that respects natural contours without extravagant flourishes. Whether chasing personal bests or enjoying a casual match, the course delivers a solid, well-rounded golf experience complemented by the Hill Country atmosphere. Booking in advance and checking seasonal conditions will ensure the most enjoyable visit to this distinctive Texas destination.

Course Highlights

I very rarely post a review, but I felt compelled after my experience at Ram Rock. Friendly staff, nice layout, challenging course. However, charging $225 and not giving your customer the heads up that the greens are both aerated and in terrible condition ruined the experience. There should have been a discount on the round, or at the very least, letting me know prior to teeing off. Neither the starter, the pro, or the staff gave any warning. To drive an hour and 30 minutes, and pay $225 to play greens that are worse than a public course in their toughest moment was a hard pill to swallow. I won't be going back and I am reconsidering playing in Horseshoe Bay altogether if they have no regard for basic decency in providing a great golf experience.

Ram Rock is a spectacular, picturesque course. Looks like the service has improved dramatically since some of the previous comments I’ve had nothing but excellent experiences with the staff, and the course is challenging, frustrating, and rewarding. 10/10 Ram rock gets it right

Pace of Play was okay for resort golf, but honestly thought with the prices they have you paying greens would be in better condition. Putting is like being on the moon with the amount of craters and divots. Albeit not 100% on just the course crew to repair, that’s on the idiot golfers who don’t know what a divot is or how to fix it, but every single green is like Rocky Mountain road and the par 3’s don’t even get me started. Slick rock wasn’t too much better either…

Imagine paying $250 for a round of golf and you walk across a bridge so unstable that it tips and you fall into the swamp beneath you halfway through the round. The greens are that of a Section 8 public course and seltzers are $14/each. Save your money and play somewhere else.

Beautiful layout. Good condition. One word of warning, the slope is over 30 even from the Executive tees🙂
