Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech

Radford, Virginia, USASouthwestern Virginia

The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech stretches over 7,200 yards of strategic parkland along the New River. This 18-hole championship course challenges golfers with open fairways, undulating terrain, and sweeping river views, offering an engaging experience for a wide range of skill levels.

Course Overview

Carved into the rolling terrain along the New River in Radford, Virginia, the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech presents a compelling challenge for those willing to test their skills against one of Pete Dye’s signature designs. This 18-hole championship layout stretches just over 7,200 yards from the back tees, inviting players with a blend of strategic shot-making and visual drama. The course’s open fairways and absence of trees allow the landscape’s natural contours and the river’s shifting moods to shape each hole’s character. Stretches of bent grass fairways contrast sharply with deep bunkers and firm, fast greens, offering a varied playing surface that demands precision and patience.

The layout combines parkland elements with rugged, riverside exposures, featuring undulating terrains and deceptive elevation changes that push players to carefully consider club selection and trajectory. Its quizzical humps and hollows encourage creativity off the tee, while the consistent proximity to the New River provides sweeping views that never overstress the golfer. The course has no trees in play, emphasizing broad angles and sightlines that reveal the unmistakable Pete Dye aesthetic of risk-reward design.

Despite its championship pedigree, the River Course accommodates a broad range of skill levels with multiple teeing grounds, enabling both enthusiasts and accomplished players to remove or add challenge as desired. Walking is encouraged, revealing subtle breaks and contours that might be missed from a cart. The on-site clubhouse completes the experience with panoramic river views that serve as a welcoming backdrop for post-round reflection.

Seasonal conditions can influence playability; summer often brings dry fairways that reward well-struck shots, while spring and fall highlight vibrant foliage that edges the course. Amenities include a well-equipped pro shop and practice facilities, underscoring the course’s role as both a training ground and a competitive venue.

For golfers drawn to Pete Dye’s strategic, visually arresting courses, the River Course offers a memorable test framed by the natural beauty of southwestern Virginia. Whether seeking a demanding round or a scenic stroll through shifting terrain, players will find much to admire here.

Phenomenal course in a beautiful setting. Pete outdid himself with this one. Fantastic views from every hole and a tough course to go along with it!

It’s a very nice course but the management is terrible. The conditions of the course are awful and they aren’t putting the resources to solve it. The tee boxes are full of divots, the rough is basically all dirt and very few grass, the grass in the fairways is so dry that it’s starting to die. The price it’s insane and for that amount of money the course should be in a better shape. It’s so disappointing.

What a wonderful gem tucked away in southwestern Virginia with fabulous views along the New River. Bent grass fairways make you want to hit the fairways even more. There are no trees in play. The bunkering and greens provide plenty of challenges for your round. Oh, and wait until you see the view from the clubhouse.

Came here for a golf trip in the middle of August. Very sweet course. We preferred the front 9 vs the back 9. Saturday morning round with a cart rental was $70 so not bad at all. Friendly staff helps with your clubs and loading onto the cart. The restaurant was solid as well and has great prices. Though opens at 11, we had to settle for a bag of chips and jerky as we had a 8 AM tee time and couldn’t eat until after our round was done.

This has got to be one of the best bangs for your buck out there. Classic Pete Dye architecture along the river, with quirky humps and hollows all over the place. Even if your last shot was not any good, your next shot will be fun!
