Odana Hills Golf Course

Madison, Wisconsin, USASouthwest Wisconsin

Odana Hills Golf Course presents a balanced 18-hole public layout featuring tree-lined fairways and strategic greens just minutes from downtown Madison. The course offers a play-friendly challenge suited to golfers of varying abilities with amenities that support a comfortable and enjoyable visit.

Course Overview

Odana Hills Golf Course offers a challenging yet accessible 18-hole layout situated just southwest of downtown Madison, Wisconsin. As a public course, it welcomes golfers of all skill levels seeking an authentic Midwestern golfing experience without the exclusivity of private clubs. The course unfolds across gently rolling terrain, blending parkland and subtle natural contours that demand strategic shot-making rather than overpowering length.

Covering over 6,200 yards from the back tees with a par of 72, Odana Hills tests accuracy and course management. Fairways are lined by mature trees that underscore each hole’s natural rhythm, while the greens showcase receptive putting surfaces framed by well-placed bunkers. The modest elevation changes reward thoughtful club selection and add subtle complexity to approach shots.

Players approaching Odana Hills will find a layout that balances challenge and enjoyment. It’s approachable for mid- to high-handicap players while providing enough nuance and variety to engage more skilled golfers. The course’s front nine introduces a steady progression of holes that build confidence, while the back nine tightens focus on precision, especially as the signature par-4 14th requires careful navigation to avoid trouble on either side.

Odana Hills serves as a community hub with a well-equipped clubhouse offering amenities like a pro shop and casual dining. Staff aim to keep play moving smoothly, although busy weekends may bring a slower pace so advanced booking and early tee times are advisable. Walking the course is popular, partly due to its manageable elevation and well-maintained paths, making it comfortable for players who prefer a screen-free round.

This course stands out for delivering honest golf in a friendly, unpretentious environment. Whether preparing for your next tournament or simply enjoying an afternoon outdoors, Odana Hills offers a practical and engaging golf experience in the heart of Madison.

Course Highlights

The clubhouse offers a welcoming space that complements the approachable golf experience.

The place is so poorly managed on the weekends it is not worth playing. We had a fivesome (which should never happen) playing so poorly, that there were 4 groups playing on the 11th hole from the green back to the tee, with another 4 some putting on the 10th green. I know the mayor hates the golf courses, but hire a ranger to manage the pace and hold players accountable so they can learn how to manage their games properly. Or at least hire a manager of some kind. All businesses should respect the hard earned money people spend at them. Odana GC does not do that. 1 hour to play three holes. Ridiculous.

Little expensive for what you get. That being said, greens were in good shape for the majority of the holes, tee boxes were good also. Decently challenging course too. Based on other reviews I thought I was walking onto a dog track, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Not worth the price. Rude course regulars think they own the course and hate when they’re told it’s public. Don’t waste your time, there are far better courses in and around Madison.

The best public track in the state. Play it every day and it never gets old. Great staff will get you out in a snap. Great conditions too.

I've played here many times over the last few years, and I've always loved it. Great public course. However, the price gouging in the fall is ridiculous, and the customer service was abysmal. Played the front 9 in 2:20 with a foursum and stopped for a bathroom break. We then asked for food and were shut down and told to GO because we were behind schedule. Definitely come here if you want to pay $65 for 18 and feel like you're doing them a favor to play here.
