Birchwood Golf Development
Birchwood Golf Development offers a scenic 9-hole public course along the Mississippi River with narrow fairways and thoughtful shot-making challenges. Its approachable layout and strong greens appeal to a wide range of golfers seeking a rewarding and affordable Wisconsin golf experience.
Course Overview
Birchwood Golf Development offers a rewarding 9-hole layout that provides an engaging experience for golfers who appreciate both challenge and scenic variety. Located in Kieler, Wisconsin, this public course caters to players seeking a compact yet thoughtfully designed round where strategy and precision hold sway. The course’s setting along the Mississippi River floodplain delivers striking views, particularly from the third hole where the river's presence becomes both a visual highlight and a tactical factor.
The course’s design features a combination of doglegs and narrow fairways bordered by mature cottonwood trees, which, while offering natural framing, test accuracy and shot selection. Water hazards introduce risk-reward moments, requiring golfers to balance aggression with caution. The relatively short yardage keeps the layout accessible to a broad skill range; however, players should not mistake its length for ease. Several holes demand careful navigation to avoid trouble and to capitalize on well-placed tee shots.
Play is generally straightforward, making Birchwood an approachable option for beginners and casual players, though more experienced golfers will find opportunities to sharpen their approach game and putting on the well-maintained greens. While seasonal variations impact conditions, the greens have consistently been praised for their quality, providing true rolls that reward thoughtful putting.
Amenities include golf carts available for rent, which come in handy given occasional wet conditions that may affect walking comfort, especially in spring. The walking-friendly layout makes for an enjoyable stroll when weather permits, with relatively flat terrain easing movement around the course. Players should be mindful that some fairways sit close to one another with limited tree buffers, warranting attentive play to maintain pace and safety.
Birchwood stands out for delivering a satisfying, scenic golf outing without the complexity of a full 18-hole course. Its inviting price point and captivating river vistas ensure it remains a valuable destination for local golfers and visitors drawn to the Wisconsin countryside's quieter pace and natural charm.
Course Highlights
The course is distinguished by its proximity to the Mississippi River, providing exceptional landscape views particularly on hole 3. Its narrow fairways with scattered cottonwoods create precision challenges uncommon for a small layout. Water hazards and doglegs add strategic elements that encourage thoughtful play rather than power.

Nice 9-hole course. Easy to walk. Amazing views. Some of the fareways are very close, with limited tree separation resulting in rouge balls in play from wild hits. The course was in OK condition despite the wet spring. Very buggy in late May,

I mean this criticism to be as constructive as it can be. Birchwood needs to fire their groundskeeper. Very poorly kept fairways and tee boxes, weeds everywhere. One caveat was that the greens were nice and so were the golf carts.

The mowers were out in force, other than that it was a fun and challenging course with excellent views for a very fair price. I would recommend it.

Only 9 holes but still fun. Gorgeous river views and nice setup. Lots of cottonwood though so sometimes tough to find your ball. All in all worth a SHOT. Go try it for yourself.

For a small town course, I find it to be fairly challenging, with dog-legs, narrow fairways and water hazards. Beautiful view of Mississippi River on hole 3 as well.
