Stuart, Virginia, USASouthwest Virginia

Gordon Trent Golf Course is a straightforward, family-run 18-hole venue in Stuart, Virginia, offering a country golf experience with natural elevation, accessible playability, and modest but well-maintained greens. It balances affordability with serene woodland surroundings, making it an appealing stop for golfers of all skill levels.

Course Overview

Gordon Trent Golf Course offers a genuine, unpretentious experience for golfers seeking a peaceful escape in Stuart, Virginia. This 18-hole public layout blends a straightforward design with subtle elevation changes that quietly shape each hole’s challenge. Stretching roughly 5,500 yards from the back tees, the course plays longer than its number suggests, with undulating fairways and greens that demand thoughtful club selection and shot placement.

The course’s landscape reflects a classic country golf atmosphere, framed by mature woods and open meadows. It’s not built for flashy architectural flourishes, but the natural contours create a flow that encourages steady rhythm and focus. Bunkers hold steady custody of some greens, while open stretches expose players to steady breezes, adding another layer to the test. While the fairways can vary in turf quality and the teeing areas remain modest, the condition of the greens generally holds up well, presenting surfaces that roll true though often a touch slow.

Gordon Trent embraces a family-run ethos reflected in its welcoming staff and community spirit. This is a course where players of diverse skill levels can find satisfaction. Beginners will appreciate its approachable length and straightforward routing, while more experienced players encounter enough subtle challenges to stay engaged. The slightly sandy greens and occasional rough patches call for patience, blending the experience of traditional country golf with the character of a course managed with care and authenticity.

The facility is accessible to all who seek an affordable round, offering carts that, while aging, serve their purpose alongside walking options for those who prefer to engage fully with the terrain. The course’s layout includes some idiosyncrasies, such as needing to retrace steps between certain holes, but this adds to its personal charm rather than detracting from play.

For golfers exploring the region east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Gordon Trent Golf Course provides a refreshing alternative to more polished, high-priced venues. Its modest greens fees and relaxed pace make it ideal for those prioritizing a straightforward, enjoyable round surrounded by gentle Virginia woodlands.

Course Highlights

First time playing on this course. I'm not sure why some of the reviews are low... Sure this is an older course. It also used to be only nine holes. So there in lies the directions on the score card. Carts are older than some other courses. Very nice and challenging course in my opinion. One big thing player's have to understand is. This is a family ran course. Of course the greens are a little slow and sandy. It's springtime people. Even greens have to be aerated, that's where the sand comes into play. My foursome will definitely be back. My hats off to the owners!!!!

Carts are old but fast. And greens are pretty good but slow. Owner is nice, and the cats are sweet. That's where it ends. The tee boxes, well, there are no real tee boxes, just marked off (sparsely) spots on the fairway...well, actually, not really fairway, just a tad shorter cabbage than what the rest of the course is made of. Thankfully, the owner marked where to go on the score card because we'd have never found our way, going from super bumpy paved to gravel to dirt cart paths and very few signs. The setting is pretty, and if you approach this like a $27 18 holes of practice hitting from bad grass, it's not too bad. But if you expect to play golf, you'll probably be frustrated with most of the holes. As mentioned, the greens are pretty good, so par 3's weren't that bad. But it needs some work on fairway grass, tee boxes, and paths. Plenty of green stuff to hit off of, but the green stuff isn't grass.

Located some 26 miles east of the Highland Golf Course, could this be the perfect Anti-Primland option? Gordan Trent Golf Course is family run, totally unpretentious, low-key, and costs approximately 1/20th what a round at the Highland Course would run you. Using my Tee Time Book (I was told that I was the first person to ever use this option at the course!), I paid a whopping $11 (typically about $15 for a senior during the week) to walk this 18 hole course. Is it a championship course with lightening fast greens, immaculate fairways, and yardage markers every 25 yards? Of course not. But it was fun, nicely maintained for its age and price & had an interesting, if not occasionally eclectic, layout; for example the walk from the #7 green basically forces you to return directly back along the fairway to return to #8. It operates at about 5,500 yards from the tips, but it felt longer. I would have guess closer to 6,000 yards because of the elevation changes/hills. Its hard to imagine a better value for your money in such a pleasant setting.
