Course Overview

Set within the rolling foothills of Pembroke, Virginia, Castle Rock Golf & Recreation offers an 18-hole challenge that balances natural beauty with strategic play. This public course appeals to a diverse range of golfers, from those seeking a casual outing to competitive players pursuing a test of skill. The layout weaves through gentle rises and mature trees, providing a parkland-style experience that unfolds with subtle elevation changes and carefully placed hazards. While it does not boast the rugged edges of a mountain course, the contours of the terrain invite thoughtful shot-making and attention to course management.

Castle Rock delivers a blend of accessibility and challenge. Fairways are generally forgiving, making the course approachable for mid- to high-handicap players, though several holes demand accuracy to avoid the well-guarded greens. The putting surfaces are known for their speed and responsiveness, rewarding precise reading and deft touch. The conditions have earned praise for maintaining consistent quality throughout the season, offering true roll and receptive landing areas.

Scenic vistas punctuate the round, with glimpses of the surrounding landscape visible from elevated tees and select approach shots. Players often comment on the course's flow, which balances longer par-5s that encourage strategic risk-reward decisions with par-3s and par-4s that test distance control and iron play.

The clubhouse serves as a welcoming hub, with amenities supporting practice sessions and post-round relaxation. The golf staff has garnered positive remarks for friendliness and responsiveness, contributing to an overall inviting atmosphere. Castle Rock frequently hosts community tournaments and social events, adding vitality to the golfing experience beyond just the course itself.

For those planning a visit, walking is encouraged to fully absorb the course’s nuances and natural setting, though carts are available on request. Proper footwear is advisable given the varied terrain and occasional steep approaches.

Castle Rock Golf & Recreation offers a rewarding round that respects the landscape’s character while delivering an enjoyable challenge for golfers across skill levels.

Just had the worst experience here, booked a reservation paid for today and everything then went to the course and there was no staff. Absolutely ridiculous met with some other golfers that also had no idea they were closed. Very poorly managed and embarrassing will not be coming back here and don’t recommend.
