NMSU Golf Course & The Player's Grill Restaurant

Las Cruces, New Mexico, USASouthwest New Mexico

The NMSU Golf Course offers an approachable 18-hole public layout defined by rolling fairways and subtle elevation changes, particularly on the back nine. Set against the high desert landscape of Las Cruces, it provides a balanced golfing experience complemented by The Player's Grill, a convenient on-site restaurant serving regional and classic dishes.

Course Overview

Located on the campus of New Mexico State University, the NMSU Golf Course offers a genuine golf experience shaped by the high desert landscape of Las Cruces. This 18-hole public course presents a compelling blend of gently rolling fairways and elevation changes, particularly prominent on the back nine, where subtle uphill and downhill sequences introduce an added layer of challenge. The layout combines elements of parkland style with an arid Southwestern character, where rugged terrain meets well-groomed turf.

Golfers will find the course approachable yet stimulating, suited for a wide range of skill levels. Fairways are generously spaced, and while some holes offer forgiveness, others require measured strategy and precise shot placement to navigate the selectively placed bunkers and undulating greens. The course’s condition varies seasonally, with the best playability often found outside the harsh summer months when the desert heat demands an early tee time to beat the sun.

The setting is defined by expansive sky views and native vegetation that provides both aesthetic appeal and strategic interest. Wind is a factor to watch, adding a natural test for tempo and club selection. The course’s key strengths lie in its accessibility and the straightforward nature of play, balanced by subtle demands on shot-making that keep experienced players engaged.

After a round, The Player’s Grill Restaurant serves as a convenient and inviting retreat. Offering a menu that features regional flavors alongside classic American fare, it’s an ideal spot to regroup, refresh, and reflect on the round. Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere make this clubhouse amenity a valued part of the overall experience.

While some reviews note inconsistencies in maintenance during offseason periods, the course’s layout and terrain merit a visit, especially in spring and fall. The onsite staff encourages walking, and comfortable footwear is recommended due to the course’s elevation shifts and natural ground conditions.

For players seeking a desert golf experience that balances playability with Southwest charm, the NMSU Golf Course delivers a straightforward, no-frills round complemented by a well-regarded dining option at The Player’s Grill.

Course Highlights

The course’s rolling topography becomes more pronounced on the back nine, rewarding strategic play with well-placed bunkers and challenging greens. The Player's Grill Restaurant enhances the visit by combining a casual dining atmosphere with quality regional cuisine, making it a unique feature on-site.

A hidden gem in central New mexico. Glad I accidentally stumbled across this wonderful golf course. Friendly staff inside. Golf course on the campus is very well laid out. Well-maintained. Fairways and greens were in excellent condition. Surrounded by the New Mexico desert oasis in Socorro is a great place to play golf. Highly recommend play in this course. Nice selection of food and beverages inside the grill. Nice place to take a break and get some food and drink inside your stomach. It's about 70 mi south of Albuquerque and definitely worth the trip

Was not impressed by the the course, neither the design nor the conditions, when we played here during winter time. But got another chance to play here again in September, that's whole another story, the Back 9 is somewhat worth spending 2 hours here, as it's a lot up and downhill designs.

The Bacon Cheeseburger was delicious. The service needs some work in the Bar/restraunt, The girls like to tack on extra charges, I have never recieved an accurate bill here.

Went here for the first time and was yelled at by the starter for attempting to use stairs that were not properly marked. No Tact from the gentleman who yelled and got pissed at me because I corrected his behavior. He was literally standing 50ft from a sign that tells you how " they care " and how professional they want to be and we should also. The course is nice. I went last week and the greens were watered and playable but the course was dry and hard to play from the fairways as the ground would vaporize when hit. I'll go back maybe when the place is watered and the grass is alive. Management should train staff about tact, class and respect.

Course was great! Greens were slow and pretty chewed up on the front. I made a tee time but things were VERY disorganized. I was told they do t make tee times after 5 yet they had my name down. When I checked in with the starter he was pissed that they let me in I was told to get a refund then it was ok. Couldn’t hit balls due to all the back and forth.
