Course Overview
Winnapaug Country Club offers a classic New England golf experience set along the picturesque coastline of Westerly, Rhode Island. This private, 18-hole layout blends a traditional seaside links style with the natural contours of the shore, providing players with an engaging and varied challenge. The course’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean influences its firm, well-drained fairways and fast, true greens, where coastal winds subtly shape strategy and shot execution.
Players first encounter wide, inviting fairways that gradually narrow into more demanding approaches guarded by strategically placed bunkers. The ocean’s breeze is a constant partner, testing tempo and club selection while infusing each hole with a distinct rhythm. The terrain is gently rolling, offering well-defined elevation changes that add visual interest without overshadowing playability, making Winnapaug accessible for golfers of all skill levels. From the forward tees, beginners and high handicappers can enjoy a fair yet stimulating round, while low handicaps will appreciate the precision required to navigate the more challenging pin locations and wind-impacted carries.
Maintenance standards have risen noticeably in recent years, with smooth, well-manicured greens and fairways that reward accurate approach shots. The course maintains a comfortable pace of play even on busier days, supported by modern amenities including electric carts with GPS and bag-carrying moto bikes that ease walking without compromising the traditional golf atmosphere.
The clubhouse serves as a welcoming hub with dining facilities and comfortable spaces to relax post-round, although access remains strictly for members and their guests, preserving an intimate golfing environment. Walking is encouraged, and players should prepare for coastal conditions with appropriate footwear and layered clothing for variable winds and temperatures.
Winnapaug's combination of seaside charm, thoughtful design, and steady upkeep make it a cherished destination in Rhode Island's golf scene. The course invites players to appreciate both the natural elements and the subtle challenges it presents, promising an experience that balances enjoyment with strategic engagement throughout every round.

I haven't played Winnapaug for a few years I used to play there a lot 30 years ago quite a few nice changes like the electric carts with GPS. Fairways are well-groomed and greens are smooth and fast. Impressed overall and coming back soon. Love the bag carry moto bikes.

I haven’t played here in probably 15-20yrs and wasn’t expecting much and was surprised about the fee on the 4th, however after playing this course that day I can say that the improvements and maintenance to the course was unbelievable, I would definitely play there again!!

I've played this course for the last 40 years and this is the best the fairways and greens have looked in a very long time. I assume there is a new superintendent. I love the way they aren't mowing everything to the ground. Letting grass grow in specific areas is giving the course some character. Speed of play was slow (played on a Saturday), backed up at just about every hole. Maybe space out tee time to 10 minutes? It would be nice to reopen the 19th hole. There was a beverage cart in the course.

Played March 7th winds gusting to 25mph. It was like a private course, didn’t score the best, but no waiting and nobody pushing us! We had a blast. Normally hit my 9 iron around 110-115, had a 68 yard chip, pullout the 9 and got all of it and landed it pin high! That’s what 25 mph will do to you, got the par by the way!

Had a lot of fun at this course. Very punishing if you miss the fairways. The bag carrying motor bikes made the day a lot more fun. Unfortunately, when teeing off on one of the holes we did not see one of the landscapers that was tucked behind a tree on the other side of a hill. I guess our ball landed in the fairway next to him so he came driving up to us yelling and wagging his finger In our faces. This completely ruined our experience at the course. When we tried to apologize for not seeing him he proceeded to yell profanities at us and drove away.

Amazing experience. The staff is great super welcoming and kind. The course is fun and in great condition. Additionally the highlight of my day and what makes this course unique is the golf cart motor bikes. Highly recommending heading over there for a round.
