NMSU Golf Course & The Player's Grill Restaurant
The NMSU Golf Course in Las Cruces presents an 18-hole desert layout that balances playability with subtle elevation changes. Its approachable design and natural terrain offer a unique golfing experience complemented by The Player's Grill Restaurant on-site.
Course Overview
Located on the campus of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, the NMSU Golf Course offers an 18-hole layout that blends desert landscapes with subtle elevation changes. This public course stretches over approximately 6,900 yards, featuring a par of 72 that provides a balanced test of golf suitable for a wide range of players. The course’s design takes advantage of the surrounding arid environment, combining wide fairways with strategic bunkering and natural desert rough that demands thoughtful shot placement rather than sheer distance.
The overall setting gives players an experience that contrasts the lush parkland style courses more common elsewhere. Instead, this course embraces the high desert’s open sky and rugged character, offering both sweeping long holes and tighter, more technical sequences, especially on the back nine. Here, gentle hills gently rise and fall, introducing a layering to the holes that rewards precise approaches and adept course management.
Playability is a highlight, with the course accommodating beginners and intermediate players through forgiving tee positions while maintaining enough challenge for lower handicaps who appreciate the nuances of the green complexes and occasional wind influence. Conditions can vary seasonally, with irrigation helping maintain green surfaces even through hotter months, although fairways may firm and dry, adding a run-and-roll element that affects shot strategy.
The Player's Grill Restaurant on-site provides a convenient and relaxed spot to refuel, offering a variety of food and beverage options that complement the playing experience. Though the facility serves a primarily local clientele, visitors will find welcoming staff and a practical clubhouse environment.
Walkers will find the course manageable, with a mostly open layout that allows for ease of movement, although comfortable shoes are advisable for negotiating some of the uphill sections on the back nine. Golf carts are available but not mandatory, emphasizing a pace of play that suits individual preference.
The NMSU Golf Course stands out as a desert oasis with a straightforward yet engaging layout. Its balance of natural terrain and accessible design makes it a worthy stop for golfers visiting southern New Mexico, offering both a challenge and a well-rounded round within striking distance of Las Cruces.

Course was great! Greens were slow and pretty chewed up on the front. I made a tee time but things were VERY disorganized. I was told they do t make tee times after 5 yet they had my name down. When I checked in with the starter he was pissed that they let me in I was told to get a refund then it was ok. Couldn’t hit balls due to all the back and forth.

Was not impressed by the the course, neither the design nor the conditions, when we played here during winter time. But got another chance to play here again in September, that's whole another story, the Back 9 is somewhat worth spending 2 hours here, as it's a lot up and downhill designs.

A hidden gem in central New mexico. Glad I accidentally stumbled across this wonderful golf course. Friendly staff inside. Golf course on the campus is very well laid out. Well-maintained. Fairways and greens were in excellent condition. Surrounded by the New Mexico desert oasis in Socorro is a great place to play golf. Highly recommend play in this course. Nice selection of food and beverages inside the grill. Nice place to take a break and get some food and drink inside your stomach. It's about 70 mi south of Albuquerque and definitely worth the trip

Went here for the first time and was yelled at by the starter for attempting to use stairs that were not properly marked. No Tact from the gentleman who yelled and got pissed at me because I corrected his behavior. He was literally standing 50ft from a sign that tells you how " they care " and how professional they want to be and we should also. The course is nice. I went last week and the greens were watered and playable but the course was dry and hard to play from the fairways as the ground would vaporize when hit. I'll go back maybe when the place is watered and the grass is alive. Management should train staff about tact, class and respect.
