Newport National Golf Club

Middletown, Rhode Island, USASouthern New England

Newport National Golf Club offers a true links-style test with open fairways, strategic bunkering, and a coastal breeze that shapes each shot. This 18-hole public course challenges golfers of varying skill while delivering a firm, classic layout accented by straightforward, well-kept conditioning.

Course Overview

Newport National Golf Club, located in Middletown, Rhode Island, offers an 18-hole championship layout that embraces the classic links style of golf. This public course challenges players with its open, windswept fairways and strategically placed bunkers that demand thoughtful shot-making and adaptability. Golfers encounter a landscape that rewards precision over power, making it a test that engages a wide range of skill levels from confident low handicaps to adventurous mid-handicappers.

The course’s design reflects a traditional links character, with undulating terrain that encourages a variety of shot shapes. The coastal influence carries through in the way the wind moves across the property, subtly influencing club selection and strategy throughout a round. Despite its open feel, pockets of native grasses and natural contours provide defining features, creating risk-reward scenarios around many of the greens.

Scenery focuses more on the golfing experience itself rather than dramatic visuals, presenting well-maintained fairways and firm putting surfaces that challenge both the approach and short game. The layout encourages a rhythm that is both methodical and lively, with opportunities to score balanced by holes that demand careful planning and execution.

Amenities cater to the diverse public audience that Newport National attracts. While the clubhouse facilities have room for modernization, the staff consistently deliver welcoming service. Practice facilities are well maintained but note that access is typically tied to tee time reservations, a detail crucial for visitors planning pre-round warm-ups.

Pace of play is generally good during less busy times, though players should be prepared for occasional course marshaling, especially during peak hours. Walking the course is possible, but players may prefer a cart given the ground’s mild elevation changes and length. Solid footwear is recommended to handle sometimes firm and fast turf.

A round at Newport National brings a refreshing taste of links golf in New England with fair challenges and straightforward navigation. It stands as a solid choice for public players seeking a mildly demanding course that rewards strategy and shot control without overcomplicating the experience.

Course Highlights

Beautiful golf course. Terribly inhospitable to public players and wouldn’t recommend. I played with a large group first thing in the morning. We stayed on pace of play the whole time and finished in four hours. As we were the first group, the ranger was on us, aggressively and demeaningly, throughout the round - sitting at our tee boxes, continually warning us to speed up. Conditions were terrible and there was NO backup on the course. That we played in 4 hours when we couldn’t see the fairway in front of us through the fog on the front 9 is actually impressive. If this is how you treat public players, just don’t offer public tee times. The ranger’s behavior really impacted my group’s ability to enjoy the day.

Course was in great shape, and staff was friendly. Not the most scenic course or exciting design, so it's overpriced for what it is.

I’ve never heard of a public golf course where you are not allowed to use the practice facilities unless you have a tee time. I’ve lived on the island for a long time and never received this information nor is it posted anywhere on their website. The place is way overpriced to begin with and now you won’t even let people use the practice green unless you pay a ridiculous $150 greens fee. Do better Newport National.

A fun challenging (eg several long par 4s from the forward tee) link style course. The course conditions were outstanding. We (3) were the second group to tee off and finished within 4 hours (thanks to the foursome in front of us who asked us to pass through after the front nine). The clubhouse, on the other hand, was pretty outdated. Also there is no flush restrooms after the front nine. I will have to keep that in mind the next time I come ;)
