Sunset Ridge Golf Links

Westbrook, Maine, USASouthern Maine

Sunset Ridge Golf Links in Westbrook, Maine delivers an 18-hole, links-inspired challenge marked by tight fairways and a strategic layout. While the course’s maintenance currently affects playability, its design encourages precision and thoughtful shot-making for golfers ready to navigate uneven ground and variable greens.

Course Overview

Sunset Ridge Golf Links presents an 18-hole course that challenges golfers with its tight fairways and deliberate design. Located in the coastal town of Westbrook, Maine, this public course attempts to blend traditional links-style elements with the natural contours of its landscape. The layout offers a mix of short and mid-length holes, requiring players to focus on accuracy more than sheer distance. While the course has potential in its design, it currently faces significant maintenance challenges that impact playability. Fairways often run narrow and thin, with varied ground conditions that demand strategic shot-making and patience. The greens are moderately sized but can be unpredictable due to inconsistent upkeep, which makes putting a careful test of touch.

Scenic views are minimal, but the course’s proximity to the Atlantic Coast invites a temperate breeze that adds an extra layer of difficulty, especially on the more exposed holes. Bunkers are sparsely placed but tend to guard the greens tightly, emphasizing precision on approach shots. The terrain is generally flat, so walking is straightforward; however, golfers should prepare for uneven footing in some areas due to rough conditions. Sunset Ridge appeals most to players who appreciate a challenge born from course conditions and strategic layout rather than manicured fairways and plush turf.

The clubhouse and practice facilities, including a driving range and putting area, provide basic amenities, though the overall presentation may feel dated. Cart paths are available but reported to be uneven, so players opting to walk should wear sturdy shoes and plan accordingly. For golfers planning a visit, it's advisable to call ahead to confirm tee times and course conditions.

While Sunset Ridge Golf Links carries a challenging design that can test shot placement and creativity, current maintenance issues temper the overall experience. Players seeking a demanding round in the Westbrook area will find that embracing the course as it plays may offer moments of strategic golf, especially for those who enjoy navigating less predictable surfaces.

Course Highlights

The course features narrow, challenging fairways and links-style bunkers protecting modestly sized greens. Coastal winds add difficulty on open holes, requiring careful shot selection. Despite maintenance concerns, its layout rewards creative play and accuracy over power.

A great course nestled among the tall pine trees of the Lakes Region. Played the back 9 and had a great time. The fairways were challenging and the greens were in excellent shape! I will definitely book another round!

******NEGATIVE 10 STARS********* I’d rather play on a parking lot, at least that would be consistent. The laziest and most disrespectful owner I have ever seen, doesn’t care if people come or not. The courses best chance of survival is a new owner with deep pockets who can fix the years of complacency it’s been put through. Not to mention the kitchen, look at the flat top (it’s visible from the front desk) and tell me you’d want to eat anything cooked on it👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

This review is strictly for the rangers. The front desk people are great, but unfortunately they work for the worst golf course in southern Maine. We are regular customers and we typically just deal with the tee boxes being completely dirt/rock and the fairway being garbage and completely un-maintained, but after today we will not be returning. It’s the fourth of July and we booked TWO tee times for 6 people. We were planning for a great day golfing with family. The ranger let a 2-some go between the tee times and then completely flipped out after our back 2 people skipped a hole to join us. Keep in mind, we told the front desk, when we booked, there was 6 of us and we want to book back to back tee times - so he booked 3 and 3. The ranger was on some power trip, being an absolute lunatic about us golfing together. Not only did we lose out on a hole, but he ruined our morning with family. Take the extra 10 minute drive or $10 in fees to go ANYWHERE else. This place is absolute garbage.

Worst golf course I’ve ever experienced. There were barely any golfers on the tee sheet and it was slow going. I was told that it was cart path only and didn’t understand why? I’ve played multiple different courses roughly 10x better than sunset ridge this season without cart restrictions. The course was 95% dry? There wasn’t a second cut around any greens. Fairways were terrible and the roughs were almost unplayable. Don’t waste your money on this course. Almost zero signage to help you get around the course. Cart baths were horrendous. It should cost about 35 dollars to play this course. My lawn is coming in better then this golf course If there was a zero out of five review that would be what I chose. Back yard golf course at best. Should qualify as a toddler course

Every year I give it a try or two to see if it’s in any better shape. Somehow it gets worse. For $70 you get ok greens, 3 inch long fairways that are as thin as my hair and hard as concrete. Rough is either just hard dirt or weeds that are even thinner than the “fairways”. Cart paths will herniate your discs and rupture your hemorrhoids. Everything else about the property like the pool, range, and clubhouse look worse and worse every year. Great tight and challenging layout. So much potential. Hopefully one day it can get water and care it deserves. If it was a value, I wouldn’t complain, but 70 is crazy for these conditions!

While I found the course design to be challenging, I found maintenance of the course deplorable. Tee boxes hadn't been cut in well over a week, I would wager, and the rough was out of control. In fact, one of the workers told us the rough machines were broke down. All the employees were very helpful and pleasant.
