Sunset Ridge Golf Links

Westbrook, Maine, USASouthern Maine

Sunset Ridge Golf Links delivers an 18-hole public layout with a links-style edge, challenging players with narrow fairways and firm surfaces amid a rugged Maine landscape. Its straightforward design rewards accuracy and strategic play, offering a raw golf experience shaped by natural terrain and minimal maintenance.

Course Overview

Sunset Ridge Golf Links presents an 18-hole layout that challenges with its tight fairways and compact design, set within a Western Maine landscape marked by rugged terrain and limited maintenance. This public course offers a links-style experience that demands accuracy more than length, with fairways often narrow and playing firm underfoot. The natural elevation changes create subtle but noticeable breaks and require a strategic approach, especially as the course navigates through a dry, uneven terrain. Players who prefer shot-making and thoughtful positioning will find moments of genuine challenge, though the course’s overall upkeep has been reported to fall short of typical expectations.

The landscape around Sunset Ridge is raw and unrefined, lending the course a stripped-back character that occasionally recalls classic coastal links but without the buffers of lush greenery or manicured surrounds. Tee boxes and fairways can play firm and fast, yet the thin grass and occasional patches of exposed soil call for patience. Greens are modest in size with moderate contours, inviting golfers to carefully judge speed and line despite inconsistent surfaces. Rough and course borders are often unkempt, affecting margins for error.

This course primarily appeals to the golfer keen on navigating a straightforward but demanding layout, without the embellishments of high-end conditioning. Cart paths are present but can be rough, and walkers should be prepared for uneven footing and dry conditions. Amenities include a clubhouse and practice area, though facilities reflect a more basic approach. Players planning a visit should anticipate playing in conditions that emphasize grit and resilience more than pristine turf excellence.

Sunset Ridge Golf Links offers a golfing outing that is honest in its demands and rustic in presentation. Its setting in Westbrook, Maine, situates it as a no-frills option for golfers in the region seeking a course that tests fundamentals amid a rugged environment. Those with patience for less manicured conditions can find value and an authentic Maine golf experience here.

Course Highlights

Sunset Ridge’s core character lies in its tight fairways and firm playing surfaces, evoking a modest links-style experience uncommon in inland Maine. The course’s natural elevation shifts and strategic bunkering require thoughtful shot placement, though inconsistent maintenance places a premium on adaptability. Its clubhouse serves as a welcoming waypoint in an otherwise raw golfing environment.

Worst golf course I’ve ever experienced. There were barely any golfers on the tee sheet and it was slow going. I was told that it was cart path only and didn’t understand why? I’ve played multiple different courses roughly 10x better than sunset ridge this season without cart restrictions. The course was 95% dry? There wasn’t a second cut around any greens. Fairways were terrible and the roughs were almost unplayable. Don’t waste your money on this course. Almost zero signage to help you get around the course. Cart baths were horrendous. It should cost about 35 dollars to play this course. My lawn is coming in better then this golf course If there was a zero out of five review that would be what I chose. Back yard golf course at best. Should qualify as a toddler course

******NEGATIVE 10 STARS********* I’d rather play on a parking lot, at least that would be consistent. The laziest and most disrespectful owner I have ever seen, doesn’t care if people come or not. The courses best chance of survival is a new owner with deep pockets who can fix the years of complacency it’s been put through. Not to mention the kitchen, look at the flat top (it’s visible from the front desk) and tell me you’d want to eat anything cooked on it👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

While I found the course design to be challenging, I found maintenance of the course deplorable. Tee boxes hadn't been cut in well over a week, I would wager, and the rough was out of control. In fact, one of the workers told us the rough machines were broke down. All the employees were very helpful and pleasant.

Every year I give it a try or two to see if it’s in any better shape. Somehow it gets worse. For $70 you get ok greens, 3 inch long fairways that are as thin as my hair and hard as concrete. Rough is either just hard dirt or weeds that are even thinner than the “fairways”. Cart paths will herniate your discs and rupture your hemorrhoids. Everything else about the property like the pool, range, and clubhouse look worse and worse every year. Great tight and challenging layout. So much potential. Hopefully one day it can get water and care it deserves. If it was a value, I wouldn’t complain, but 70 is crazy for these conditions!

A great course nestled among the tall pine trees of the Lakes Region. Played the back 9 and had a great time. The fairways were challenging and the greens were in excellent shape! I will definitely book another round!

This review is strictly for the rangers. The front desk people are great, but unfortunately they work for the worst golf course in southern Maine. We are regular customers and we typically just deal with the tee boxes being completely dirt/rock and the fairway being garbage and completely un-maintained, but after today we will not be returning. It’s the fourth of July and we booked TWO tee times for 6 people. We were planning for a great day golfing with family. The ranger let a 2-some go between the tee times and then completely flipped out after our back 2 people skipped a hole to join us. Keep in mind, we told the front desk, when we booked, there was 6 of us and we want to book back to back tee times - so he booked 3 and 3. The ranger was on some power trip, being an absolute lunatic about us golfing together. Not only did we lose out on a hole, but he ruined our morning with family. Take the extra 10 minute drive or $10 in fees to go ANYWHERE else. This place is absolute garbage.
