Located just minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, the course invites golfers of all levels to engage with a design that emphasizes strategic shot-making over sheer length.

The terrain presents gentle hills and mature trees lining fairways that demand accuracy off the tee. Greens tend to be moderate in speed and present a variety of subtle breaks, encouraging thoughtful putting rather than aggressive strokes. The course’s fairways and surrounds are maintained to a high standard, offering a clean playing surface that retains its character throughout the year. While the yardage is modest, the course’s layout compels golfers to navigate tight angles, making it well-suited for intermediates while still remaining playable for beginners fortunate to avoid the more challenging pin placements.

Walkers will find the course accessible though moderately hilly; sturdy shoes are recommended to manage some of the elevation with ease. While the pace of play can slow during peak times given the public access and proximity to a vacation hub, morning rounds typically move more briskly.

For players seeking nearby coastal scenery coupled with an enjoyable test of golf without navigating overly complex challenges, Santa Barbara Golf Club is a practical and rewarding destination. Its combination of playability, setting, and service makes it a favored course for locals and travelers eager to experience golf close to the heart of Santa Barbara.

Except for the overturned tanker truck on the 101, we had a Great time playing this course, again. For us it was worth the drive up from Orange County. The staff is Great, thanks for the enjoyable day.

Great for a muni course and easy to get to about 8-10 minutes from the beach in town. Loved the layout. Greens were on the slower side. Small practice range on site. Super friendly staff. I saw another guy grab rental clubs that were brand new Taylormade with a Scotty Cameron putter - if you don’t bring your own you won’t get stuck. The clubhouse and cafe was great - country club quality food. I played a late afternoon round at 5:15pm (last group - early august) - play was painfully slow. We didn’t even get 9 holes in before sundown at 8:15. We walked to be able to play a little longer ( it’s hilly) a cart wouldn’t have helped go faster. Remember, it’s the closest public course to a vacation destination, so we were not disappointed and expected slow play and enjoyed the environment. I would give it 4.3 stars if that was an option. Morning round might be quicker.
