Riverwalk Golf Club

San Diego, California, USASouthern California

Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego offers an 18-hole public course marked by strategic elevation shifts, true rolling greens, and well-placed hazards that create a compelling challenge for golfers of all abilities. Its urban setting blends natural beauty with accessibility, making it a popular destination for both locals and visitors.

Course Overview

Riverwalk Golf Club presents an engaging layout right in the heart of San Diego, delivering a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of varied skill levels. This 18-hole public course stands out with its subtle elevation changes and thoughtfully maintained greens that reward strategic play. The design incorporates tight fairways bordered by well-kept bunkers, encouraging precision from the tee while offering run-up shots into greens that roll true and smooth. Players will find several holes where water hazards and island-style greens require careful consideration, blending risk and reward seamlessly throughout the round.

Set along Fashion Valley Road, the course offers a blend of urban accessibility paired with glimpses of Southern California’s natural beauty. Scattered palm trees and native vegetation line several fairways, providing a gentle contrast to the cityscape beyond. This environment creates a calm yet focused atmosphere suitable for both casual rounds and serious practice. Riverwalk’s practice facility receives consistent praise for its welcoming setup, including a driving range where hitting from turf mats is standard, though some days grass tees are available, adding variety to warmups.

Playability is a highlight here, with the course inviting players who seek a test without overwhelming punishment. While some sections present tight corridors and hazards that challenge the skilled, plenty of bailout areas exist for newcomers or higher handicaps. The conditioning of tees, greens, and bunkers reflects ongoing maintenance efforts, ensuring the course feels cared for despite its urban municipal setting.

Amenities include a friendly pro shop staffed with helpful personnel, although players should anticipate a relaxed pace of play; marshals are sometimes needed to maintain rhythm. The club’s approachable nature makes it an attractive choice for locals and visitors eager to experience golf in a vibrant city location. Riverwalk Golf Club balances technical demands with a welcoming environment, creating a rewarding venue for those willing to navigate its strategic landscape.

Course Highlights

Riverwalk Golf Club features island greens and several bunkers that strategically guard scoring opportunities. Played course on March 6, 2024. Not sure why this course does not have 5 stars. Maybe it's cause the Californians are spoiled but this is definitely a great course. From the start they have a great practice area. The only knock is have is the turf mats but from the looks of it, it seems that some days they allow grass hitting which is good. They guys in the pro shop are helpful and welcoming. As for the course, tee boxes in great shape, the fairways have a few dirt spots but if you hit it where you should you don't have to worry about that. Greens are in fantastic shape and roll true. Bunkers are also in great shape. It is a challenging course with some elevation challenges. I definitely will be back when I get the chance. Pace of play was slow though, need a marshal out there to make sure people are not hitting more than one ball slowing everything up.

Pro shop staff is very nice. But once we got down to the cart rental things just went down hill. It was my first time at this course bringing my two teenage sons and he was so incredibly negative and insulting. CiIt was embarrassing because we had other patrons watching him berate us. Definitely not a relaxing beginning. We were able to get to the 16th hole in peace and a patron tells us we need to speed up our playtime, when we had separate group of 4 still playing our same hole a few yards ahead of us. For spending $350 for 4 hours of stress this location left a bad taste for me and my family.

Fantastic round of golf! The greens are rolling well and they recently re-did the bunkers. Overall course in great shape a few spots in fairways you can tell they’re working hard on. Can’t wait to get back!

I think it's the most beautiful Muni course in the city center. The green was fast, but the course was fun and the scenery was beautiful. The flaw was that the bathroom door was locked in the middle, but it was a fun game. There were sevaral hazards and island greens, so it needed a challenge, but it was a satisfactory game.
