Club at Discovery Harbour Golf 18-Hole Course
Set near the southern tip of Hawaii’s Big Island, the Club at Discovery Harbour offers an approachable 18-hole public course that blends coastal views with gentle terrain. It’s a laid-back venue ideal for casual rounds and players seeking a relaxed yet scenic golfing escape.
Course Overview
The Club at Discovery Harbour in Naalehu, Hawaii, offers an 18-hole golf experience set against the unique backdrop of the Big Island's southern coastline. This public course invites players of varying skill levels to engage with its straightforward layout and refreshing ocean breezes. Unlike many resort courses in Hawaii, Discovery Harbour's design emphasizes accessibility and relaxed play, making it a suitable choice for golfers seeking casual rounds without sacrificing the pleasure of island golf.
The course unfolds over terrain that integrates gently rolling fairways with panoramic vistas of the Pacific. Its setting near sea level offers expansive views, where steady winds often influence ball flight and test shot control. Well-maintained tee boxes and greens provide a consistent playing surface, though players should be prepared for subtle undulations that require careful putting readings. Several holes reward strategy over power, with bunkers and native vegetation marking fairway edges and governing approach shots.
The pace of play here is generally unhurried, allowing golfers to absorb the calm surroundings and soak in the Hawaiian sun. While the course lacks the high-end polish of some island resorts, it compensates with a welcoming, low-key atmosphere ideal for midweek rounds or weekend escapes.
Visitors can find basic amenities at the modest clubhouse and bar, where local hospitality complements the relaxed vibe. The course’s modest green fees and public accessibility encourage new golfers and locals alike to enjoy the game without premium pricing. Given its location, players are advised to bring sun protection and comfortable walking shoes, as the flat layout allows for easy navigation on foot.
Though the Club at Discovery Harbour does not feature sprawling resort facilities or extensive practice areas, it stands out for its approachable design and scenic ocean views that remind players why Hawaiian golf is treasured worldwide. For those exploring golf options on the Big Island’s southern rim, this course provides a straightforward yet rewarding round framed by island air and volcanic soil, a blend that creates a quietly memorable day on the links.
Course Highlights
Noted for its coastal setting with ocean views on multiple holes, the course features fairways framed by native Hawaiian vegetation and well-placed bunkers that challenge approach shots. The steady trade winds from the ocean add an extra layer of strategy, influencing shot selection throughout the round. While no signature hole is officially designated, several require precise control to avoid the natural hazards and shifting winds. The course provides an accessible layout without sacrificing interest, appealing to both newer golfers and those seeking a relaxed test.

Saturday night. Small crowd. The food is good. I don't like that you can only come 3x with a punch card. Then forced to become a member for 100.00 bucks??? Bar keep kept apologizing while explaining this.

Called to schedule a tee time. Was staying in a a house watching the course and barely anyone is playing here. Greens are terrible and they wanted $70 for fee, cart and club rental. You can play at volcano which is an amazing course for less than this pile of crap. Pro shop lady was absolutely terrible to talk to. Do yourself a favor and go play at a different course. Don’t waste time going to south point to play on a poorly maintained course for WAY to much money.

We found the Discovery Harbour club through a recommendation of some friends. It's a small bar with an extremely friendly and gracious manager. Prices are very reasonable, especially during happy hour. It is a members-only club and non-members are welcome for up to three visits. We are not members, but stopped for a beer and some snacks. A great little find!
