Del Lago Golf Club

Vail, Arizona, USASouthern Arizona

Del Lago Golf Club in Vail, Arizona, presents an 18-hole parkland-style course set amid desert terrain and mountain vistas. Designed for a range of skill levels, the course challenges precision and course management with unique desert features and varying elevation under an arid sky.

Course Overview

Located in the high desert landscape of Vail, Arizona, Del Lago Golf Club offers an 18-hole public course built for golfers seeking a distinctive southwestern challenge. The layout embraces a parkland style, blending desert scrub and rugged terrain with pockets of mature trees that provide shade and variety throughout the round. The course’s features encourage strategic play by testing shot-making with elevation changes and desert winds that influence club selection and tempo.

Del Lago’s setting frames the game with expansive views of the surrounding mountains, creating a horizon that shifts from desert browns to blue sky. The course demands accuracy off the tee, as many holes funnel toward well-protected greens guarded by uneven bunkers and natural desert elements. Players will find scoring opportunities on the smoother putting surfaces, though consistent approach shots are rewarded.

Designed to challenge mid- to low-handicap golfers, Del Lago still welcomes a broad range of skill levels with multiple tee boxes to accommodate different distances. The terrain can be firm and fast, so playing during cooler morning hours offers more forgiving conditions. Walkers should be prepared for uneven footing in some fairway spots, especially in drier months when the course’s desert nature is more pronounced.

Amenities include a full-service clubhouse that serves as a comfortable gathering spot post-round, with food and beverage options reflecting Southwestern influences. While the course reflects a work-in-progress status regarding fairway turf and bunker maintenance, recent efforts aim to enhance playability and overall course condition.

For golfers planning a visit, bringing adequate hydration and sun protection is essential due to the arid climate. Cart availability varies, encouraging some to enjoy the course on foot to better absorb the changing landscape. Though challenges exist in course upkeep, Del Lago rewards players with its natural setting and a game that embraces the character of southern Arizona golf.

Del Lago Golf Club stands as an accessible desert option within the Vail area, offering both scenic variety and tactical demands without overwhelming less experienced players. Those drawn to golf courses that engage both mind and muscle will appreciate the subtle complexities awaiting every round here.

Course Highlights

Del Lago Golf Club combines a desert parkland layout with natural desert hazards and elevation changes that influence shot strategy. The course architecture focuses on preserving the rugged desert character while offering a variety of challenging holes. Wind is a significant factor, especially on longer holes, and the elevation provides scenic mountain backdrops. Recent improvements aim to enhance turf quality and bunker conditions, supporting more consistent play.

This golf course is unforgettable! If anyone ever asks me about the worst course I have ever played, I will have an easy answer. Horrible features include dried brown grass in the fairways, hard packed dirt in the bunkers, no drinking water on the course, no GPS on the carts, and takes the driver out of your hand on many holes. Never again!!

Played yesterday. Course in bad shape. Any ball even slightly off the center of the fairway has you hitting off of cement like ground with no grass. This was true around the greens also. Literally no sand in the traps. Several tee boxes shaved so close that there were large patches of dirt. I have played this course several times in the past and I really liked the layout and course conditions. Hope it gets better.

Course was in good shape overall but had some really rough patches and the sand traps were like concrete.

Fairways are sporty and somewhat dry but overall a fun and challenging course. Your driver can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

I’d rate this course lower if there was an option. The staff was incredibly rude to myself and my partner, guilted us the entire time for being a couple minutes late to our tee time which I understand but it was mentioned by every single staff member to us multiple times. Other golfers rushing you to play because the course has limited carts. And don’t even get me started on the state of the course itself. Some tee markers were missing, trash cans all filled to the brim with trash flowing out of them, fairways dead and dirt, bunkers with hard sand, and the greens were in terrible shape.

Our group of 8 played 18 holes using silver tees. Course was challenging yet fun for all. Most played well despite some works in progress on the front 9 tee boxes and greens. Green speed was great for our group. We wrapped up the day with an amazing dinner in the club house. The Chef knows his art for sure and the friendly staff set the positive mood. Burgers to Ribs we all enjoyed. Excellent value and highly recommended. Will come again.

Played 9 holes on Feb. 20th,2025. The course is in terrible shape. Pro shop guy was great and gave us a rain check for nine, will try again next year. We deserve better than this. The staff was great!! 2 stars for that.
