Quarry Pines Golf Club

Tucson, Arizona, USASouthern Arizona

Quarry Pines Golf Club presents a unique desert golfing challenge set within a former rock quarry near Tucson, Arizona. Its 18-hole layout combines open fairways and tight, elevation-rich holes that test strategy and precision amidst striking desert scenery.

Course Overview

Quarry Pines Golf Club offers a distinctive golfing experience amid the rugged terrain of Tucson’s high desert. This public 18-hole course occupies a former rock quarry site, creating a dramatic setting where elevation shifts and desert flora naturally shape the game. As you navigate its fairways, the landscape alternates between broad, forgiving stretches and tighter corridors that demand precise shot-making, crafting a challenge that appeals to golfers at all levels.

The front nine serves as a gentle introduction with wider fairways and open sightlines, allowing players to settle into their rhythm. By contrast, the back nine intensifies, weaving through a valley framed by rocky outcrops, where narrow fairways and shifting elevation test both strategy and patience. The course’s greens are generally true and well-maintained, encouraging confident putting despite occasional subtle breaks that reward careful reading.

Quarry Pines’ desert environment is a character in itself; the arid climate keeps the course firm and fast, especially during warmer months, while native cacti and desert trees outline the holes without overwhelming the play space. The course demands thoughtful club selection and course management, particularly on the back nine where errant drives can quickly become costly. Players should come prepared for the heat and bring plenty of water when the sun ascends Tucson’s clear skies.

Amenities include a friendly pro shop staffed by knowledgeable personnel and well-maintained cart paths, though many golfers appreciate the walkability of Quarry Pines for a more immersive round. Despite some variation in pace of play at busy times, the course remains a favorite among locals for its blend of natural beauty and tactical golf. Whether you seek a leisurely round with scenic desert views or a test of skill amid elevation changes and tight fairways, Quarry Pines stands ready to deliver.

Visitors should plan their rounds during early mornings or late afternoons to avoid peak heat and take advantage of softer course conditions. With its distinctive layout and approachable yet rewarding challenge, Quarry Pines Golf Club is a compelling destination for golf in Tucson.

I use to dislike this course because I was a pretty bad golfer and never appreciated how tough it was. Gotten better over the years and I absolutely love it now. It's a fun challenge and I gotta say the people that work the carts are great. Mark and Alan especially! One thing I don't like is the way there prices change. Only course in Tucson where I'll never know what they are going to charge for 9 holes or twilight rate and every time I go it's a different story on price change. Very weird.

Make sure you bring lots of balls. Tight fairways and some incredibly challenging elevation changes, greens mostly ran fast but as expected. Course was in great shape considering we were in a 110F heatwave. Lots of fun even though it took a bite out of me.

Played in early March. Course was in great shape. Tee boxes were great. Fairways were immaculate, and greens were true, fast, but not too fast. Easy location. Front nine was solid, not spectacular. Back nine was spectacular and amazing. Pace of place was very slow though. Almost 5 hours.

Front 9 was totally not impressed, some holes even with not-so-good conditions..... Fortunately, the design of the Back 9 is somehow challenging and interesting 🤔 Basically Back 9 is circling around a vally, the fairways are always narrow, so you'll need to use some course management intelligence to conquer them.

One of the funnest courses I've ever played. The front 9 is a traditional links course, while the back 9 plays down into an old rock quarry, with huge elevation changes and some impossible par 3s. Some holes look like they're straight out of a PGA Tiger Woods Golf game.
