Quarry Pines Golf Club

Tucson, Arizona, USASouthern Arizona

Quarry Pines Golf Club transforms a former rock quarry into an engaging 18-hole public golf experience marked by dramatic elevation changes and well-kept desert fairways. This course challenges players with a gradual shift from open front nine holes to tighter, elevation-rich back nine holes set in a rugged valley environment.

Course Overview

Quarry Pines Golf Club, located in Tucson, Arizona, offers a uniquely rugged yet inviting experience for golfers seeking a blend of challenge and natural beauty. This 18-hole public course is carved from a former rock quarry, lending it distinct character with dramatic elevation changes that shape both strategy and scenery. The layout balances generous fairways on the front nine with tighter, more demanding holes on the back nine, which navigate a valley setting that demands precision and thoughtful club selection.

The course’s desert environment lends a warm and dry backdrop, framed by towering rock faces and native vegetation. Despite the arid surroundings, the fairways remain lush and well-maintained, offering an unexpectedly verdant playing surface that contrasts beautifully with the rugged terrain. Greens are maintained with care, providing consistent roll and subtle breaks that invite players of all levels to test their putting skills.

Quarry Pines stands out for its versatility—from the broad sightlines early in the round to the strategic intricacies on the back nine, where elevation and angle of approach frequently dictate shot choice. Golfers will find the course approachable enough for those working through their game, while still offering enough complexity to challenge more experienced players. Elevation shifts intensify as the round progresses, especially on the closing holes, making endurance and mental focus as important as technical ability.

The facility includes a well-stocked pro shop and friendly staff who contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. While pace of play can vary, particularly on busy days or during high heat periods typical of Tucson, early tee times are recommended for the most pleasant experience. Walking is allowed and recommended for those who want to immerse themselves fully in the course’s subtle contours and desert ambiance; sturdy shoes are advised given the terrain.

For golfers exploring the Southwest, Quarry Pines offers an engaging round framed by the stark beauty of a reclaimed quarry. It is a course that rewards both patience and creativity, presenting each hole as a distinct dialogue between player and landscape.

Played in early March. Course was in great shape. Tee boxes were great. Fairways were immaculate, and greens were true, fast, but not too fast. Easy location. Front nine was solid, not spectacular. Back nine was spectacular and amazing. Pace of place was very slow though. Almost 5 hours.

Front 9 was totally not impressed, some holes even with not-so-good conditions..... Fortunately, the design of the Back 9 is somehow challenging and interesting 🤔 Basically Back 9 is circling around a vally, the fairways are always narrow, so you'll need to use some course management intelligence to conquer them.

One of the funnest courses I've ever played. The front 9 is a traditional links course, while the back 9 plays down into an old rock quarry, with huge elevation changes and some impossible par 3s. Some holes look like they're straight out of a PGA Tiger Woods Golf game.

I use to dislike this course because I was a pretty bad golfer and never appreciated how tough it was. Gotten better over the years and I absolutely love it now. It's a fun challenge and I gotta say the people that work the carts are great. Mark and Alan especially! One thing I don't like is the way there prices change. Only course in Tucson where I'll never know what they are going to charge for 9 holes or twilight rate and every time I go it's a different story on price change. Very weird.

Make sure you bring lots of balls. Tight fairways and some incredibly challenging elevation changes, greens mostly ran fast but as expected. Course was in great shape considering we were in a 110F heatwave. Lots of fun even though it took a bite out of me.
