The Highlands at Dove Mountain
The Highlands at Dove Mountain presents a compelling desert mountain golf challenge with 18 holes that marry natural terrain and manicured conditioning. Offering smooth greens, strategic bunkers, and panoramic vistas, this private course welcomes players who appreciate carefully crafted design in a striking Southwestern setting.
Course Overview
Set against the rugged foothills of the Tortolita Mountains, The Highlands at Dove Mountain offers an 18-hole championship golf course that appeals to players seeking both scenic beauty and thoughtful design. This private course blends desert mountain terrain with lushly manicured fairways, creating a striking contrast that challenges and invites golfers of varied experience. The layout demands attention to shot placement, with elevation changes and natural desert features influencing strategy on nearly every hole.
While the surroundings evoke the spirit of the Southwest, the course itself provides a playability balance that makes it accessible to mid and low handicappers alike. Tee boxes are carefully positioned to accommodate different skill levels without compromising the course’s strategic integrity. Greens present smooth, true surfaces, rewarding precise approach shots and deliberate putting. Bunkers are both plentiful and well-maintained, acting as guardians to many of the fleet greens.
The Highlands at Dove Mountain is more than just golf. The clubhouse offers expansive views over Tucson and the surrounding peaks, an ideal setting to relax before or after a round. Dining here combines refined fare with a welcoming atmosphere, featuring a menu praised for standout dishes like their Cobb salad and French dip sandwich (though the latter has sparked some debate among patrons).
Players walking the course will find the terrain firm and generous in footing, though desert hiking shoes or trail-ready golf shoes are recommended to navigate rocky inclines with ease. While golf carts are available, walking enhances the experience of the natural environment and allows you to absorb the backdrop of saguaro cacti against a vast sky.
The Highlands at Dove Mountain stands out as a desert mountain retreat that balances challenge with approachability. Whether sharpening your short game on smooth putting surfaces or savoring the views from a ridge top, this course offers a memorable golf experience shaped by its rugged environment and uncompromising maintenance standards.
Course Highlights
The Highlands at Dove Mountain integrates natural desert mountain-inspired design with meticulous landscaping. Signature elements include elevated tees overlooking saguaro-studded canyons, well-guarded greens with strategically placed bunkers, and wide fairways that funnel shots into challenging approaches. I was working nearby and didn’t have my lunch with me so I stopped here for a sandwich. I chose the French dip. I chose wisely. It was one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. Caramelized onions, horseradish, roast beef, cheese, and good bread. I enjoyed my sandwich. So why only three stars? Because I can say with absolute certainty, that this was the most pathetic excuse for au jus ever. EVER! This is not hyperbole nor an exaggeration. What they gave me can’t even qualify as au jus. I knew something was wrong almost immediately when I took the lid off the container because it looked like ice tea. This is not an exaggeration. It was that light in color. And of course, because it had very little substance, it had very little flavor. To be honest, it didn’t even taste beefy, it literally tasted like brine. Just water and some caramel color and salt. I’m not even all that much salt. What makes it even more perplexing is that I would have been perfectly fine if they had said, “we are out of au jus.” I would’ve been happy with my sandwich. But this poor substitute that they served me just felt dishonest. It was as if somebody had forgot to make me the au jus and someone in the kitchen said they could whip up a batch in two minutes, and nobody would be the wiser. Honestly, shame on you. Next time just say you’re out and retain some integrity.

We had the opportunity to play the Highlands at Dove Mountain. The staff in the pro-shop were very friendly and helpful. We played towards the end of September and the course was nothing less than amazing. The greens were smooth and held any shot. They putted very true and we're about a 10'6"-11 on a stimp meter. The sand traps had plenty of sand and were in incredible shape. The fairways were thick and plush. The roughs were thick but played very fair. Our group will be back to play it again soon.
