The Highlands at Dove Mountain
Set against the striking backdrop of the Sonoran Desert, The Highlands at Dove Mountain offers an 18-hole championship course where desert terrain meets precise design. Known for its lush fairways, challenging greens, and stunning mountain views, it welcomes players ready to engage with Arizona's distinctive golf landscape.
Course Overview
The Highlands at Dove Mountain presents an 18-hole challenge that balances rugged desert beauty with precise course craftsmanship. Located in Marana, Arizona, this semi-private facility offers a championship layout that appeals to a broad spectrum of golfers, blending natural desert terrain with manicured fairways and fast, true greens. The course’s design integrates the native landscape of the Sonoran Desert, with saguaro cacti punctuating the views and desert washes creating strategic hazards that demand thoughtful shot placement.
Players encounter an elevation that introduces subtle changes in club selection and shot trajectory, as holes wind through the undulating terrain framed by distant mountain vistas. The fairways are wide enough to invite aggressive drives but narrow quickly near greens guarded by deep bunkers and challenging contours. The greens themselves reward solid approach shots and a steady putter, with breaks that test reading skills without overwhelming less experienced players.
The Highlands caters to golfers seeking an inspired walk or ride, with peaceful stretches away from urban distractions. The course is well-maintained year-round, featuring lush fairways irrigated to contrast the surrounding arid environment. This creates an engaging visual dynamic as players move from desert roughs into verdant turf. Several elevated tees offer panoramic views over the landscape embracing Marana’s natural character and the surrounding mountain ranges.
On-site amenities accommodate a comfortable visit, including a clubhouse with dining options praised for quality and atmosphere. The pro shop staff is attentive, assisting with equipment needs and local insights to enhance every round. While the Highlands maintains a more private membership structure, visitors often find access through member sponsorship, events, or limited public play opportunities.
Walking the course is encouraged and practical; the layout is accessible for various fitness levels, with paved cart paths available throughout. Footwear with firm traction is advisable given occasional rocky terrain near desert borders. Seasonal conditions typically allow for year-round play, though summer months bring high temperatures requiring early tee times.
The Highlands at Dove Mountain stands as a compelling desert golfing destination where natural terrain challenges merge with careful conditioning, shaping an experience both demanding and rewarding for golfers of all skill levels.

I was working nearby and didn’t have my lunch with me so I stopped here for a sandwich. I chose the French dip. I chose wisely. It was one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. Caramelized onions, horseradish, roast beef, cheese, and good bread. I enjoyed my sandwich. So why only three stars? Because I can say with absolute certainty, that this was the most pathetic excuse for au jus ever. EVER! This is not hyperbole nor an exaggeration. What they gave me can’t even qualify as au jus. I knew something was wrong almost immediately when I took the lid off the container because it looked like ice tea. This is not an exaggeration. It was that light in color. And of course, because it had very little substance, it had very little flavor. To be honest, it didn’t even taste beefy, it literally tasted like brine. Just water and some caramel color and salt. I’m not even all that much salt. What makes it even more perplexing is that I would have been perfectly fine if they had said, “we are out of au jus.” I would’ve been happy with my sandwich. But this poor substitute that they served me just felt dishonest. It was as if somebody had forgot to make me the au jus and someone in the kitchen said they could whip up a batch in two minutes, and nobody would be the wiser. Honestly, shame on you. Next time just say you’re out and retain some integrity.

We had the opportunity to play the Highlands at Dove Mountain. The staff in the pro-shop were very friendly and helpful. We played towards the end of September and the course was nothing less than amazing. The greens were smooth and held any shot. They putted very true and we're about a 10'6"-11 on a stimp meter. The sand traps had plenty of sand and were in incredible shape. The fairways were thick and plush. The roughs were thick but played very fair. Our group will be back to play it again soon.
