Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run

Newport News, Virginia, USASoutheastern Virginia

Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run is a public 18-hole parkland course offering an accessible layout with generous fairways and practice facilities. Ideal for golfers seeking a straightforward round with room to develop their game in a welcoming environment.

Course Overview

Located at 901 Clubhouse Way in Newport News, Virginia, Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run offers a versatile and approachable 18-hole layout that caters to a broad spectrum of golfers. This public course combines practical design with a straightforward setting, making it particularly attractive to players seeking an enjoyable round without excessive challenge. The course’s terrain is predominantly parkland-style, featuring gently rolling fairways lined with mature trees and strategically placed bunkers that encourage thoughtful shot placement.

The fairways are generous, providing ample landing areas, which makes the course approachable for beginners and intermediate golfers while still offering sufficient challenge for those working to lower their handicaps. The greens present subtle contours and require careful reading to navigate, particularly when the fast summer conditions come into play. The course length hovers around standard yardage for a public facility, making it manageable in terms of distance but rewarding accuracy and course management.

Newport News Golf Club prioritizes accessibility and practice opportunities, featuring a driving range and areas dedicated to short game improvement. Instructional programs take place here, supported by a professional staff known to be helpful. The clubhouse is clean and functional, offering basic amenities such as rental clubs, snacks, and a small pro shop.

Golfers planning a visit will appreciate the user-friendly layout and reasonable greens fees, though it is worth noting that cart policies and rental rules are specific and vary depending on time of day and group size. Walking the course is common but players should plan accordingly, as cart availability can be limited.

Though the course does not claim architectural grandeur, its simplicity and open access make it a steady choice for local players and visitors alike. The natural landscape interacts quietly with the round, while the straightforward design encourages players to focus on fundamentals and enjoy the pace of play. Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run is best experienced as a solid mid-level public course, where practice meets casual competition in a welcoming atmosphere.

Course Highlights

The course features wide, tree-lined fairways and classic parkland bunkers that challenge approach shots without overwhelming newer players. The practice range and short-game areas support local instruction and skill development. Greens provide moderate contouring that rewards accurate iron play and precise putting. The clubhouse provides essential services but keeps the focus on the game itself rather than luxury amenities.

I visited Newport News Golf Club recently to hit a few balls at the range. I've previously taken golf lessons here. Their instructors are great and helped me with my swing. The clubhouse is clean and well maintained as is the rest of the course. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Some of the golfers are not as friendly. Prices are very affordable. Overall this seems to be a popular course for good reason.

I get off work. I get there at 4 o’clock wanting to rent a pull cart to play nine holes. They tell me it’s too late now there are only two of us so I wanna rent a cart for 18 holes. We don’t rent any carts for 18 holes past 356 It’s 4 o’clock so they can’t do that. They tell me I can play nine holes for $25 and ride. Well, to play 18 it’s 32. It makes no sense. That’s pretty obviousThere’s only two of us it’s gonna take us probably maybe three hours to play 18 holes Carts have to be back in by eight something to walk nine holes it’s $16 but the play 18 it’s the same rate WHAT!!! Whoever makes these rules do not play golf It’s the Newport News city course. It’s not Williamsburg country club by a longshot. SERIOUSLY!!!!!!! For a city course there’s way too many Rules

Usually, a great place to practice and play. However, I'm disappointed to see that the grounds crew has decided not to cut hole locations on the practice green or chipping green the last few weeks. Hopefully, it's only due to the heat. If not, I might need to look into a new place to practice.

Paid for 18 holes, only got through 7 because it started storming, and they wouldn’t issue me a rain check. Never heard of a golf course not giving rain checks — what a joke of a business. I called the general manager (Woods Woolwine) about it and he did not care to make things right at all. On top of this, the Marshaller on the course was incredibly rude. I had a friend with me from out of state so we were using the same clubs and she told us we have to rent another set of clubs. Overall, this place acts like it’s a fancy and boujee course, when it actually is just awful and over-priced, due to terrible and rude leadership and staff.

Have been here pretty consistently for a while and EVERY SINGLE TIME I go I get a lot of attitude from every single staff member that works there and I am completely fed up with it and will not be going back. The nicest person at the complex is the employee that cleans the golf carts, it’s absolutely pathetic how rude a bunch of old pro shop workers can be, if this was my golf club every one of them would be fired immediately. Do better Deer Run.

This course doesn’t care about expanding the game to younger generations. Wouldn’t let my son ride with my group on a weekday. The guys in the pro shop need to get off of their high horse and show a little compassion. It’s not like this course is on the upper scale of courses in the area.
