Lake of Isles Golf Club

North Stonington, Connecticut, USASoutheastern Connecticut

Lake of Isles Golf Club challenges golfers with a demanding 18-hole parkland layout featuring fast, elevated greens and well-maintained fairways. This public course balances strategy and playability within a serene setting accented by shimmering lakes and mature woodlands.

Course Overview

Lake of Isles Golf Club presents a compelling blend of challenge and natural beauty that beckons golfers seeking a demanding yet rewarding experience. This 18-hole public course sprawls across a carefully designed landscape in North Stonington, Connecticut, offering a layout that tests every facet of a player’s skill. The course’s parkland style features elevated and fast greens that heighten the stakes around each approach shot, demanding precision and strategic club selection.

Set amid gently rolling terrain, Lake of Isles weaves through pockets of trees and water hazards that subtly influence shotmaking decisions without overwhelming the routing. The fairways are well-manicured, providing consistent lies, but rough areas can be punishing, especially for less experienced players or those venturing too far from the short grass. Golfers will find this course both approachable and exacting, appealing to mid- and low-handicap players eager for a genuine test rather than a casual stroll.

One of the defining traits of Lake of Isles lies in its conditioning. Greens are notably fast, encouraging a more thoughtful pace and precise putting strokes. While some recent rounds have shown signs of wear around the cup locations, the overall grooming of tees and fairways remains top-notch. The views from select holes open up scenic glimpses of lakes and mature trees, lending a calm visual contrast to the strategic demands on the course.

Beyond the course itself, amenities include a modern clubhouse facility that offers welcoming spaces to relax before and after rounds. The club accommodates a steady flow of public play with structured tee times, an experienced professional staff, and on-site rental services. Lake of Isles is a destination where competitive golfers can engage their skills in a setting that balances challenge with accessibility. Planning a visit during the spring or early fall months often yields ideal playing conditions when temperatures are moderate and greens hold true.

Lake of Isles encourages walking, with modest elevation changes that keep players connected to the natural rhythm of the game. Paying close attention to weather forecasts and wearing spikeless or soft-spiked shoes will enhance comfort on footing. This course offers a substantial test paired with thoughtful design elements, making it a notable stop for golfers traveling within the region.

Course Highlights

The course is known for its challenging elevated greens and strategic water hazards that influence shot placement. Several holes reveal panoramic views of surrounding lakes and mature forest, adding visual interest to the layout. The putting surfaces demand precision, with subtle breaks that reward careful reads and touch. Though primarily a championship-level course, Lake of Isles retains an inviting atmosphere for ambitious players seeking to hone their game.

Beside the Bethpage Black, I think this golf course is arguably the best public in the tristate area. The course is maintained beautifully. The course layout is challenging and beautiful. The view is, in some holes, breathtakingly picturesque. The green fee is rather steep, but it is totally justified.

Words cannot describe how truly incredible our entire wedding experience was at Lake of Isles. Not only is the venue absolutely stunning, but the dedicated staff went above and beyond to make sure that everything turned out more beautiful than we could have ever imagined. Going into your wedding day can be extremely stressful but Bethany, Fox and the rest of the team put in their all to make sure we felt prepared and could enjoy our day. I will forever recommend LOI to anyone who is looking for their wedding venue. Photos by JBenson Photography

Played two days. Course is great. Service is not. Good weather day one but they were hosting wedding so no food or drinks after the round. Day 2 it’s raining, no course ranger, no turn food, inside staff unprepared and undermanned. They had a groups playing as 8 somes. 6 hour round. It’s trick or treat here apparently. Would struggle to recommend

This company called me to make an interview I did not apply for. I was told they had my resume from “a while ago.” I agreed to meet, although happy in my current role, because Stonington is a potential place I would live at some point. I signed on to their link for Teams invite and was left waiting with no one ever attending from the company on the day and time they chose. They wasted the beginning of my morning in a recovery holiday early week. More insultingly never even reached out afterwards. Thus I have no choice to deliver this well deserved review for lacking any concern for people’s time you as a company engaged. I have never learned all I needed to know about a company top down, before even having an interview, then I did yesterday.

Nice golf course. Big and tests your game. Layout is a little vanilla. Not a lot of holes stick out in my memory. The greens are fast but they were REALLY beat up when we played. Shoe marks everywhere around the cup. Almost seemed like they keep the same pins for multiple days. Kind of disappointing for such an expensive course and rated as one of the best in CT. 5 foot putts bouncing all over the place because of all the traffic around the cups. Very frustrating.

Course was in terrific shape. Very difficult though if you're playing out of the rough, with all the elevated & fast greens.
