Woodlands Golf Course

Hampton, Virginia, USASoutheast Virginia

Woodlands Golf Course in Hampton, Virginia offers a compact 18-hole parkland experience marked by mature trees and strategic hazards. Welcoming to all skill levels, it combines approachable terrain with thoughtful challenges and well-maintained greens for an enjoyable round.

Course Overview

Woodlands Golf Course offers a thoughtfully designed 18-hole layout that blends accessibility with engaging challenges for players of varying skill levels. Located in Hampton, Virginia, this public course presents a compact yet spirited test of golf, stretching to approximately 6,200 yards with a par of 71. Its parkland style unfolds across gently rolling terrain dotted with mature trees, strategic water hazards, and a generous distribution of bunkers that require careful shot placement without overwhelming less experienced golfers.

The course’s atmosphere is inviting yet competitive, catering well to seniors, women, and newcomers while still demanding tactical precision from seasoned players. Golfers will appreciate how subtle elevation changes influence club selection, particularly on the back nine where water hazards come into play more frequently. The greens run true and are maintained to ensure consistent pace, adding an element of finesse to the putting game.

Among its defining features is the interplay between tight fairways guarded by well-positioned sand traps and open landing areas that reward controlled aggression. The layout encourages thoughtful navigation; several holes flow close to one another, which can require attentiveness when moving through the course but also creates a sense of connectivity throughout the round.

Amenities include a modest clubhouse with friendly staff and a casual café that serves straightforward fare, perfect for post-round relaxation. Golf carts are available for those who prefer not to walk, though the course’s approachable length and terrain make walking comfortable for many. Players are advised to bring sturdy footwear for footing on sloping ground and to plan weekend visits carefully due to the course's popularity.

Woodlands Golf Course remains a strong value in the Hampton area, striking a balance between playability and challenge. Its design encourages steady improvement while allowing seasoned golfers to test their short game and course management skills. Whether seeking a welcoming introduction to the game or a competitive local round, Woodlands provides a fulfilling golf experience framed by tasteful landscape and consistent maintenance.

Course Highlights

Woodlands stands out for its compact parkland layout that balances tree-lined fairways with water hazards and bunkers placed to challenge strategic thinking. The course's mature tree canopy and subtle elevation shifts add character, while closely situated holes require attentiveness in navigation. Despite its shorter yardage, the course has earned respect for hosting local amateur events and providing a powerful challenge without demanding maximum length.

Excellent bang for your buck. Awesome entry point for new golfers, tricky enough for experienced golfers, and always a good round.

This is a weekday play. 30 bucks. Fun time. Must play is in 100 miles. 06/09/24 Went and played 18 the other day, the course was nice, 27 with cart. Got some food after it was tasty, chicken salad sandwich. Great place to spend a couple of hours. 04/29/24 Went back to play 18 with my buddy. 27 with cart. Fun little coarse and the players are always friendly. Food at the cafe is solid. 10/26/23 I have played this course so many times over the last 30 years, but it was ten years ago since I have played. You can still rent pull carts. The price is great and it is a fun little 18. Food is wonderful also. There was a very nice young lady making food. I will be back. The greens are great. Fast.

I called ahead to confirm all the details needed to play golf here, and everything seemed good to go. However, when I arrived, the person at the register told me I couldn’t play because it would “overcrowd” the area. Meanwhile, I watched others being allowed in without issue. The inconsistency in treatment felt unfair, and honestly, it came across as discriminatory. If there were legitimate concerns, they should be applied equally to all guests. Unfortunately, this experience left a bad impression, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to others looking for a welcoming and inclusive environment. After this horrible customer service, he told me about another golfing place 5 minutes up the road, which turned out to be 20* minutes away in Newport News.

Great, challenging course! The greens were in really nice shape. The course had lots of water obstacles and sand traps that made for an exciting game. The staff was friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that the holes were on top of one another and it made navigating the course difficult. All in all, a great day for the price!

The Woodland's is living proof that all golf courses do not need to be 7,000 plus yardage to be tough ! Just look at the scores when the Hampton Amatuer is played , some of the best players in the south east and yet they do not score super low ! It is still just what Seniors and ladies need to have a great challenging game
