Russian Jack Springs Golf Course

Anchorage, Alaska, USASouthcentral Alaska

Russian Jack Springs Golf Course in Anchorage offers a nine-hole layout blending artificial greens and natural fairways for an accessible, casual round. Its fast turf putting surfaces and strategically placed bunkers create a unique short-course challenge ideal for beginners and recreational players seeking affordable, all-season golf.

Course Overview

Russian Jack Springs Golf Course offers an inviting and approachable golf experience for players seeking a casual yet enjoyable round in Anchorage, Alaska. This nine-hole facility presents a hybrid challenge, combining artificial greens and tee boxes with natural fairways that wind through a modestly wooded setting. The course layout alternates between par 3s and par 4s, demanding a thoughtful short game while encouraging smooth, accurate tee shots. Though it lacks water hazards, strategically placed sand traps provide a touch of tactical intrigue, encouraging players to consider shot placement carefully.

The artificial turf greens play exceptionally fast, requiring a delicate touch and heightening the importance of reading subtle breaks. However, this surface differs significantly from standard putting greens, prompting some adjustment for those used to grass putting surfaces. In exchange, the turf remains consistent in all weather conditions, making play possible early in the season and on days when natural greens might be unavailable.

Fairways have a natural rough texture that can be challenging at times, especially for beginners, as errant shots occasionally disappear amid thicker grass. The tee boxes, while firm due to the artificial turf, provide solid footing, though players may find themselves adjusting stance to compensate for the hard surface. This course lends itself best to casual golfers and those new to the sport who want to practice shot precision without the pressure of a traditional championship course.

The surroundings frame the layout with gentle elevation changes and local vegetation, offering views of Anchorage’s parklands and distant hills. This setting invites players to embrace the Alaskan landscape with every shot. Affordable green fees and generous daylight hours during the summer months make Russian Jack Springs Golf Course a practical destination for locals and visitors alike.

While it is not a traditional golf challenge, the course encourages improvement through manageable distances and a forgiving design. Its friendly atmosphere and cost-effective play option appeal to beginner and recreational golfers. Expect a pace of play that suits relaxed rounds, and come prepared to experience an unconventional but enjoyable Alaskan golf setting.

Course Highlights

The course features fast artificial turf greens that run significantly quicker than typical putting surfaces. Its nine holes alternate between par 3 and par 4, with some narrow fairways framed by Alaskan parkland trees. Sand bunkers add strategic elements around the greens, and small elevation changes create subtle challenges for shot selection.

Unfortunately, this was a big disappointment… if you’re a beginner and are just looking to get a feel for golf, then maybe you’ll have fun, however the greens aren’t even close to what real golf greens feel like. You can’t chip onto the green because you’ll just cross it over and over again because of how fast the artificial greens play. My husband and I have NEVER not finished a round but we would play to the green and then pick up and go to the next hole and not putt out. The fairway was mowed as a typical rough… so you could hit a perfect shot straight out into the fairway and STILL lose your ball because of how thick it is. Additionally, the tee boxes are so hard you can’t put your tee in it… so then you move to the side to use a tee and have to stand on the mat which causes a downhill lie. All in all, it’s not representative of a real golf course and is just for fun not for actually playing golf or trying to play for “par”… overall, I don’t recommend this course, even for $8. Not to mention, if you’re a beginner, you’re going to want a forgiving course that gives lots of roll and a wide open fairway for mistakes, neither of which the thick rough-like or narrow tree lined fairways offers.

First time I hit the ball in about 5 years. I've never played this course before. It's not open yet just for practice.

I really enjoy playing on this nine hole course. There is great scenery, fun layout on most holes, variety in the challenges presented, and it's only $8 to play. Par 3's and 4's only. No water hazards, some sand traps. Some fairways are narrow which can be a little harder for beginners, but overall a very forgiving course. The tee boxes and greens are artificial turf, which takes some getting used to (the greens play FAST). They close at 8, which seems pretty early for Alaska summers, but they let you stay after hours and finish your nine holes, so that's nice, though they do pull the flags. You DEFINITELY get your money's worth!

It was a nice place/setting for my baby shower. However, I didn’t like the fact how we were constantly rushed to clean up, get out and the vibe they gave was rude. Guest were still sitting down eating and they came back to back starting @ 7:30pm to start cleaning up, which only took us 10mins to break down/clean.
