Yahara Hills Golf Course

Madison, Wisconsin, USASouth-Central Wisconsin

Yahara Hills Golf Course presents two diverse 18-hole layouts that blend open parkland with mature trees and large greens. Its welcoming yet challenging terrain offers a revealing test for golfers of varied abilities amid the rolling landscapes near Madison, Wisconsin.

Course Overview

Yahara Hills Golf Course offers two 18-hole layouts set within the varied terrain just outside Madison, Wisconsin. Known primarily for its East and West courses, this public facility presents a blend of open fairways and dense tree lines, providing an experience that challenges strategy and shot-making for golfers across skill levels. The courses stretch across gently rolling land, with large, undulating greens that invite precise approach shots and demand careful putting.

The East Course is often praised for its fair yet testing character, featuring wide fairways that reward thoughtful placement while the greens’ contours require a steady stroke to navigate successfully. Natural elements shape the playing conditions here – subtle slopes and occasional crosswinds keep players engaged throughout their round. The West Course offers a contrasting test with tighter fairways and thicker rough, offering a greater challenge for more advanced players who appreciate a risk-reward dynamic.

Yahara Hills embraces a parkland style, with mature trees standing guard over the holes and serving as both natural hazards and visual landmarks. Bunkers are present but vary in condition, with some requiring improvements to complement the overall course aesthetics and playability. The rough around the courses can be unforgiving, putting an emphasis on accuracy off the tee and patience when recovery shots are necessary.

Golfers visiting Yahara Hills will benefit from reasonable green fees that reflect the solid conditioning and variety on offer. The large greens are well-maintained and hold consistent speed, especially in cooler conditions. While the course can accommodate players of all abilities, the more demanding terrain and positioning make it particularly appealing to mid- to low-handicap competitors seeking to sharpen their game.

Walkers are welcome and will find the layout manageable, though sturdy footwear is recommended due to the sometimes uneven footing in rough areas. Golf carts are widely available, enabling a comfortable round for those less inclined to walk the undulating terrain. On-site amenities include a clubhouse with a pro shop and practice facilities, allowing players to warm up before teeing off or unwind after their round.

Yahara Hills offers an engaging Midwestern test where natural beauty meets practical design, providing moments of quiet reflection along with tangible golfing challenges. Its two distinct courses, inviting yet occasionally demanding, encourage repeat visits from locals and travelers alike.

Course Highlights

Yahara Hills features two contrasting 18-hole courses with large, contoured greens and varied fairway widths. The East Course offers open fairways and strategic wind considerations, while the West Course demands precision with tighter corridors and penal rough. The mature tree lines and natural terrain create holes that test shot selection and course management.

Big greens, wide open fairways, a good place to work on your game. Bunkers need alot of love or they just need to get rid of some of them as they’ve effectively become waste areas. Feel like the value is not there for what they’re charging until they figure out the bunker situation. Nobody wants to guess what you’re supposed to do when you’re in a greenside bunker full of weeds and hard pan.

We were yelled at walking in, rushed the entire time, and paired with two people randomly with no warning. Only come here if you are a PGA level golfer, otherwise you will be too slow and they will let you know

The course was in really good shape and the greens were medium fast. We played at a decent pace with no pressure from behind and not having to wait for any group ahead of us. The price of $63 with the cart was reasonable. All of the staff I interacted with were pleasant and helpful. Thankfully the wind was blowing to the north so we were not treated to any landfill aromas. Always a plus at Yahara Hills. All in all a pleasant day.

Really surprised by how nice the East Course was. I know that was the more popular one, will have to try the West Course next time. Greens were fast and challenging...large greens. Beautiful trees line the course and it's fair. Super value and a worth a visit and play. Hope they can keep 36 holes open. *Update: after playing here many times now I do have some updated observations. There is no bunker upkeep..maybe one ok bunker on a par 3. The rough is very punishing..hard to find your ball or hit out of, if you end up in it.*
