Old Greenwood Golf Course

Truckee, California, USASierra Nevada

Old Greenwood Golf Course presents a striking mountain golf challenge with 18 holes framed by Sierra Nevada forests and granite. This private course offers strategic variety and firm greens that engage players across skill levels seeking a rewarding alpine round.

Course Overview

Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee, California, offers an 18-hole, championship-caliber experience set within the Sierra Nevada’s dramatic landscape. This private course combines mountain golf charm with a thoughtful design that rewards strategic play and shot-making creativity. The course weaves through gently rolling terrain, framed by towering pines and granite outcrops, creating a visual contrast between alpine ruggedness and meticulously groomed fairways.

At just over 7,000 yards with a par of 72, Old Greenwood challenges golfers with its mix of risk-reward holes and multiple line options that invite players to shape shots around hazards rather than simply blast through them. The greens push firmness and speed but remain responsive, encouraging thoughtful approaches and sharp putting. The layout is suited to competent players who seek variety: some holes offer safe plays to preserve par while others beckon the bold to attack tighter pin placements or elevated greens perched atop natural contours.

The course’s setting is unmistakably mountain golf, with frequent glimpses of the surrounding peaks and peaceful forested pockets that help separate holes, adding to the sense of immersion and focus. Though several homes line the course, the design maintains its integrity without veering into overt resort territory, providing an authentic golf experience amid tasteful development.

Amenities include a clubhouse featuring upscale dining and well-appointed locker rooms, accommodating members and their guests with refined comfort after rounds. Walking is encouraged, supported by manageable elevation changes and smooth, well-maintained cart paths. Dressing in layers is advisable as the alpine air can shift swiftly.

Old Greenwood calls to golfers who appreciate a test of precision and planning in an alpine context. Its course conditioning and variety of shot challenges make it a rewarding choice for those who value a blend of natural beauty, technical golf, and understated luxury. Whether arriving to practice, compete, or enjoy a serene day on the links, players will find this layout a memorable addition to California’s mountain golf offerings.

Terrific course/property. Good variety of holes with amazing views. First round in a long time where I used every club in the bag…which is fun! Plenty of houses on the course, but doesn’t feel overly “resort-y.” Will definitely be back when in the area.

Obviously a top-tier track where even twilight rates are through the roof. We played Coyote Moon first, and this course, while beautiful, didn’t overwhelm us the same way. It was a little more penal and less fun and some of the other customers were a little snooty. But that’s how it goes when you have more money than you need.
