Ole Monterey Golf Club

Roanoke, Virginia, USARoanoke Valley

Ole Monterey Golf Club delivers an accessible 18-hole round featuring gentle rolling terrain and views of the Blue Ridge foothills. This public venue offers a relaxed atmosphere suited for golfers seeking affordable play with a natural Virginia setting and straightforward course design.

Course Overview

Ole Monterey Golf Club, situated just outside Roanoke, Virginia, offers an 18-hole, public-style layout that balances affordability with a straightforward golfing experience. The course occupies a gently rolling landscape with sweeping views that include the distant mountains and Wells Fargo tower, providing a backdrop that’s both accessible and quietly scenic. While Ole Monterey lacks the manicured precision expected of high-end destinations, its character lies in the relaxed environment and the casual challenge it presents to golfers of varied skill levels.

The layout favors players who prioritize pace and enjoyment over technical precision. Fairways are generally forgiving, though errant shots can be swallowed by tall grass and brush in places, requiring thoughtful shot selection. Greens have struggled with consistency in recent seasons, reflecting maintenance challenges, so putters should expect variable surfaces that test adaptability more than touch. Despite these conditions, the course can reward strategic play, especially around tighter holes where placement demands attention.

Notably, the woods lining several holes frame shots and create natural corridors, while the occasional wildlife sightings, such as deer seen around hole 16, add a subtle connection to the surrounding environment. Golfers sharing fairways and the potential for errant balls from nearby holes underscore a need for vigilance and respect among players.

This course is a destination for locals and budget-conscious travelers willing to trade pristine conditions for a welcoming layout and wallet-friendly rates. Ole Monterey is surrounded by complementary venues like Blue Hills Golf Course, creating options for multi-course outings in the Roanoke area. The clubhouse facilities are modest, reflecting the club’s community-oriented nature rather than a resort experience.

For those planning a visit, sturdy footwear is advised due to areas of uneven turf and rough patches. Morning tee times may offer more consistent playing conditions before midday winds influence ball flight. While Ole Monterey may not satisfy every golfer’s technical expectations, it stands as a practical, approachable choice for players seeking relaxed rounds amid classic Virginian foothills.

Course Highlights

Ole Monterey features a straightforward 18-hole layout with several tree-lined holes and natural brush areas that influence shot strategy. The course offers elevated tees with views of Roanoke and natural wildlife sightings, notably deer near hole 16. While conditions vary, its affordability and accessible design make it a favored local option for casual rounds and practice sessions.

By far the worst course I've ever played in my life and it was $50!? WILD. It was a fun challenge playing some shots out of the rough but the everything here just sucks. Staff was great though

By far the worst course in the Roanoke valley. Doesn’t mow the grass anywhere. Way over priced. All around the worst in the Roanoke valley

Great course. If you’re going to miss, miss left off of the tees! Almost got hit twice by golfers on adjacent holes. One guy actually managed to hit the top of our golf cart from 180 yards away which scared me pretty good, but thankfully we weren’t injured. I have played this course probably 15 times. It’s a lot of fun. I always see deer on hole 16. Great place to play and very affordable. Beautiful views of the Wells Fargo tower and the mountains. It’s next to Blue Hills golf course also. On hole 13 I think you could walk through the woods and be at the green of home number 4 in blue hills.

Awful experience. Rates went up but shape of course went down. Only one green on the entire course that was in good shape. Hit several balls down the middle only to find the grass 6-8 " high. Weeds around tee boxes. Definitely a locals course. Pay a little extra and go to Blue Hills. Auburn Hills in Riner is Excellent and the same price! Very disappointed

This place was supposed to be better since we got a new mower but it is still trash. Don't even bother wasting your time coming here unless you just like to play on crappy greens.

Like horrible nightmare, thought I went back to work. Called the day before and was told golf course was in pretty good shape. A wasted 37 dollars. They tell you everything a mower is on the way but never shows. If they would lower the price to about 15 dollars, you could practice and get pretty good hitting from rough. I don't think the people working there are very friendly are know what good shape is. We saw 3 other groups playing or trying to play or looking for balls in the fairway.
